If you’ve ever hit a brick wall in family research because names were spelled differently across records, you’re not alone. I put together a practical surname spelling variations guide to help you track those changes with care and confidence—so your family tree stays accurate without losing the human story behind it. It’s especially helpful for U.S. researchers tracing immigrant or European roots, or anyone working to connect reunions, memorials, and long-held family questions. Let’s turn confusing spellings into clear documentation you can trust.

Ever open your family tree and wonder how it drifted off course—one wrong parent, one missing record, and suddenly whole branches don’t match? In my latest post, I break down eight of the most common causes of family tree errors, from mislabeled relationships to overlooked documents and name changes that ripple through generations. I take special care with how these mistakes affect real people and family memories, because accuracy and respect should go together. If you’re building a tribute, planning a reunion, or trying to connect the dots across time, this is a clear, careful guide to get your records steady again.

Family stories can hang on one question: who is who, and what proof actually holds up? In “Records Proving Parentage: What Really Counts,” Janet walks you through which documents matter most, so you’re not guessing when your family’s history is at stake. With her careful, human approach, you’ll learn how to sort incomplete records, connect the right people across time, and preserve meaningful connections without losing accuracy. If you’re building a family tree, planning a reunion, or clarifying a missing piece of your heritage, this is the kind of clarity you’ll be grateful for.

This is Jennifer Shaffer, The Formidable Genealogist - and she is pretty incredible. I’m sharing her rant from yesterday about a post about the closings of several National Archives buildings and “deleting digitized records.” Let’s just compare - only about 2-3% of our archives are digitized. UK is 5-6%. Europe is 5-20% based in the individual country. What do you think??? 🤔
