Officials from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission say that the abundance estimates for scallops in St. Joseph Bay were the lowest on record, well below the numbers posted in surveys over the past five years.
Using a series of transects, with each one covering 200 square meters, the researchers determined only 45 scallops were found in 70 transects.

This 2026 survey of St. Joseph Bay Scallops gives an indication of the limited areas where scallops were found, and of the continuous and patchy areas of seagrass which is their habitat. [ Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission | Fish and Wildlife Research Institute ]

Pier Update: By now you all know we have received our Army Corps permit, which was the last of the major hurdles on the permitting side of the project. As for FEMA, the project is in LPN (Large Project Notification), which is the final review and notification. The review part is now complete, so all that is left is the notification part of the project. We were told that will take about 2 weeks. At that point FEMA obligates the funds to the State of Florida, which handles disbursement to the City.
