This piece is called “Freedom.”
I worked on it for the 250th anniversary of America and offered this short explanation: Happy 250 Years of the Experiment for The People and By The People.

This art is about an uncaged bird. The impetus for it was writer Maya Angelou’s poem, “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings.”

“Freedom” is an interlocutor for me: a conversation I am having with life beyond me and, also, by drawing inspiration from Angelou’s experience of America, a dialogue that bridges the past to today.

A 1969 autobiography, Angelou’s poem is a revelatory tracing of the early years of her life. It’s a reminder of how the younger years of people’s lives are formidable in defining how they see themselves and the world around them.

Growing into adulthood is a recurring theme in lots of artists’ works. Also, nature is a recurring theme in my artwork which I began developing (drawing on my iPhone) while facing extraordinary health challenges. I focus on creating art that is boldly colorful, unique and often thematic while also attempting to “plant” some beauty and positivity in the world. Much of my art includes flowers — among my favorite things in the world.

In Angelou’s case, her poem shows how strength and literature helped her overcome racism and trauma. The final passage reads:

The caged bird sings
with a fearful trill
of things unknown
but longed for still
and his tune is heard
on the distant hill
for the caged bird
sings of freedom.

Our lives and how we spend them are a mirror to ourselves and a window to others of what it means to be on this earth and leave a mark. Art is truly honed visual storytelling … it’s just another way of speaking to people that may or may not involve words and language.

At different times, we are all like birds. We soar, we travel, we seek sustenance, our wings may be clipped, we take refuge in Mother Nature, we find mates, we nest, we are parts of communities, and one day our physical selves cease to exist but I believe our souls and legacies live on.

In all of this, humans remain rooted to the idea — and especially in the United States — that freedom is a right … yet also a gift that some people do not have. I envision this bird forever symbolizing the power of freedom and hope.

Hi everyone, wherever you are on this Wednesday.

I had a friend who recently told me she bought a piece of my art because looking at it made her feel good and she wanted something uplifting in her life.

That meant the world to me. She found a happy place at artbydzm.com.

To me art is magic. It’s an escape, a sojourn, a world you can step into, and also a resting space where you can breathe easier and understand the vastness of the human mind and spirit, and the loveliness of turning an idea in your mind into the tangible.

Here I have two acrylic pieces I’d like to show you. One is called “Flowers Being Cut for Vase” and it’s colorful and engaging. When I was drawing it I thought it would be neat to draw a pair of scissors hanging on the side of the vase. This piece has a kind of energy and quality that will add to any space — whether on a kitchen windowsill, above a cabinet or on the wall in a summery (or wintery) nook.

The other piece is “Jenny.” She is one of my cornerstone Women of Strength artworks and her short story will be mailed to you if you purchase the piece. It’s a very intriguing glance into a life of purpose during World War II in Chicago. I loved creating her story as well as inventing Jenny as a striking and fashionable redhead with a hopeful face and a twist of vintage. A photo shows the acrylic piece above a nightstand in a bedroom.

⏰ This 20” x 30” framed print is called “Time and Metamorphosis.” This artwork is telling a story but somehow becomes ethereal and “other worldly” too. (Yes, the melting clock is a nod to Salvador Dali.)

I drew this on my iPhone while I was reflecting on my painful autoimmune, neurological and visual/migraine conditions. Here, the insular moment steps beyond this woman, and the art invites the viewer in.

I’d be curious to hear what you think the artwork is saying.

🦋 Butterflies and moths fall into a category of what is known as Lepidoptera. They have existed for nearly 200 million years and remain amazing life forms whose essence is transformation.

But for humans, the question also persists: Is life a series of metamorphoses as we move through different phases?

🐛 Metamorphis starts with an egg. The next stage is the larva (caterpillar) which is followed by the pupa. The final stage is an adult which has wings and can fly and reproduce.

Time, however, exists on a continuum. It is present in the past, present and future.

In this piece, the woman is looking forward … and somehow she and the moths, butterflies, moon and a noticeable fog create their own ecosystem and world whose “place” of existence includes these neurological and physical challenges.

I am showing photos of this piece in two different spaces in our house. I love the one where the art echoes the Frida Kahlo pillows in the hall given to me by two different friends. Kahlo lived with extraordinary pain in her life stemming from polio and a trolley accident.

I want to share with you an art piece called “Nature Is A Circle” that was inspired by how I look at the earth, and see the way things in the natural world are connected in both a delicate and complicated synergy.

This piece is about the magical planet we call home. The imperfections of living somehow add up to perfection when we exist in nature.

Often an idea pops in my mind and I don’t know where the piece is going until I am creating it. In this case, I decided to draw a fantastical and colorful sphere that shows how things flow from one to another. You can imagine the lovely sky, bird, ocean, tree, flowers, sun and grasses in a never-ending dance.

And somewhere tucked into all of that are you and me and the animals and people who make up the tapestry of our lives.
