WE’RE CLOSED TODAY // Sorry about that, folks!

As a disabled small business owner, I’m no stranger to working through pain, fatigue, and general discomfort. In fact, I built this business from a bed during the years I was housebound. It’s a regular day at the office for me to crunch a dozen dislocated joints back into place, and carry on like nothing happened. Like many people, post-Covid, I developed a heart condition, and when it comes to heart stuff—I don’t play. Over the last week, I’ve become increasingly symptomatic. For some reason, the last three nights I haven’t slept, and last night—while not sleeping—I had an episode.

Sometimes, the body demands rest.
Sometimes, it’s my job to listen.

My backup shop support is on bereavement leave this week, so today, everyone’s job is simply to take care of themselves.
The store can rest.
Tasks can wait.

We’ll see you all tomorrow.

Take care,
AJ

For being the so-called “Death Store”, there’s a whole heck of a lot of life that happens here.

And a big welcome to our new neighbors, Dark Room Skate & Life Supply!

It’s a few more weeks until the equinox, but that doesn’t leave us nearly enough time to live in our favorite season. Autumn is a time for honoring impermanence, abundance, and loss. It’s a time for connecting with our ancestors and the earth, and preparing for the winter season of quiet and rest. Fall has fallen over KALMA. The shop will be growing in power—and vibes—over the coming weeks. Whether from near or far, we can’t wait for you to come visit.

Our Joy Chain is a ritual for gathering our Joy. What makes you proud? What keeps you on the planet? Where do you find wonder? Write your answer on a strip of paper, and weave it with ours, to create an ever-growing canopy in The Parlor.

When I talk with people about their grief, we talk about the Big Stuff: disability, death, poverty, genocide. What has always struck me about the Joy Chain is that it’s overwhelmingly the Small Stuff: napping, opposums, the moon, the color of a poppy flower in the summer. The grief of this world can feel so immense, and yet, when you ask people what makes life worth living—it’s the magically mundane. What makes our lives worth living is all around us, if we only look for it and declare it so. Grief and joy coexist, they don’t cancel each other out—and our world is abundant in both.

Have you ever added to our Joy Chain?

I can’t stop thinking about this quote from Mia Mingus: “We must leave evidence. Evidence that we were here, that we existed, that we survived and loved and ached. Evidence of the wholeness we never felt and the immense sense of fullness we gave to each other. Evidence of who we were, who we thought we were, who we never should have been. Evidence for each other that there are other ways to live—past survival; past isolation.”

It’s important to leave evidence of our existence, resistance, and resilience. It’s important to tell our own stories. In addition to The Parlor’s polaroid camera, we now have a screenless digital camera for unbridled self-documentation. Photos on the camera might just find their way to our socials or our scrapbook.

Find The Parlor’s camera; leave evidence.

One of the most common misconceptions about griefwork is that it is depressing. Grief can be so many different things, so griefwork can feel like many different things, too.

As a person who’s spoken with thousands of people about grief over the years, here are some reflections about what really happens when we welcome people to acknowledge their grief:
