Last year I was given a few old youth bows from the 1950’s/60’s. These bows were commonly used at schools and YMCA camps of that time. Notice the small hole in the upper limb over the string grooves. It was used to hang the bow in stores for display.

This was a project/experiment that I took a lot of time with. All told…about 16 weeks. I disassembled the riser and all glue joints. I lightly sanded and removed the old finish before letting everything sit about a 2 months while checking moisture and weight regularly. Once the weight and moisture stabilized I started to sand and reassemble with glue and clamps. Once dried I wrapped all glue joints with synthetic sinew for strength and piece of mind. I lightly heat treated and put a little reflex back in the limbs (which reduced the deflex set on each limb by over an inch). It went from 2 1/4” to 1” on one limb and 2” to just under an inch on the other and is still holding that after I lightly re-tillered out to 22”. After twisting a new string I bought the appropriate arrows for the draw weight and shot it many times drawn to that max to see if it would blow. I’m both thrilled and honestly surprised it survived.
This is a perfect weight and length to teach my nephew how to shoot a bow.
And even at just 20 # of draw weight it is not a toy. It is a snappy bow at 70 years old.

Happy Beautiful bow I restored for my nephew.

I just finished up this left hand Hickory flat bow. After shooting right hand only for all my life, I started practicing from both sides about a year ago. I do it to work the muscle groups equally. And now to my surprise, I think my left hand shooting is better than my right!

SOME ADVANTAGES TO MAKING YOUR OWN BOWS

When you can make your own bows…

1… you don’t have to go spend hundreds of dollars if you want a new one. Just make it!
2… if you want one that shoots opposite hand(left shooting for me), just make it.
3… if you need to tune the bow to accommodate your shooting style you don’t have to spend hundreds of dollars for add ones, accessories, or specialized tools. You already have everything you need.

The consistency required for traditional archery is almost entirely developed through deliberate, focused practice. Because traditional bows lack sights and mechanical releases, muscle memory and consistent form are your only tools for accuracy. This is a short Osage self bow.

7 more inches to go my friend! 노아

My friend began work on his first bow in December however weather and scheduling put an abrupt halt on the project just as we got started. Western Pennsylvania winters are unpredictable for sure and this past one was ❄️. (I loved it but travel was tough) It’s great to have you back 노아

It’s so easy to get lost in the flow. Just focusing on the piece in front of you and nothing else. This will be a Hawthorn flat bow…. (Hopefully) nothing is guaranteed when working with wood.
