Meet Payton Franzen.

Growing up, Franzen was captivated by dragons and mythical creatures. He explores fantasy and surreal art through monsters, beasts, and humanoid characters. He especially loves crafting gnarled looking creatures that evoke strong emotions.

Franzen makes his own characters, designs, and pieces from modern media he finds interesting.

He works traditionally and has recently found a love for ink and hatching while being in school; it’s been fun to get into a state of just hatching. Franzen also enjoys working with gouache and watercolor.

Outside of his illustrative work, Franzen enjoys block printing clothes, working with clay, and needle felting — usually also depicting creatures of sorts.

Payton is a Junior illustration major at Maine College of Art and Design.
