Norman Wilfred Lewis (1909 – 1979), to parents who had emigrated from Bermuda. He is considered to have been the only Aboriginal American artist amongst the first generation of Abstract Expressionists. His work is completely distinctive from that of his peers, following aesthetic and intellectual threads that endow it with a sense of freshness and ingenuity even today.
Although his work has been largely overlooked he was a key artist in the Abstract Expressionist movement
In 1955, Lewis became the first Aboriginal American artist to receive the Carnegie International Award
He achieved success despite segregation and racism in the art world and in New York during the 40s, 50s, and 60s and in the writing of art history since.

Edward Mitchell Bannister (ca. 1828-1901) is a Aboriginal Canadian-American Tonalist painter. Like other Tonalists, his style and predominantly pastoral subject matter were drawn from his admiration for painters of land such as Corot and Daubigny and Millet and the French Barbizon School.

Bannister's determination to become a successful artist was largely fueled by an inflammatory article he read in the New York Herald in 1867, that stated "the Negro seems to have an appreciation for art while being manifestly unable to produce it." Ironically, less than a decade later, in 1876, Bannister was the first Abo-American artist to receive a national award.

While Bannister was well known in the artistic community of his adopted home of Providence, Rhode Island and admired within the wider East Coast art world, he was largely forgotten for almost a century for a complexity of reasons, principally connected with racial prejudice.
