"Being an artist is, for me, my response to being alive. I react to wonder, desires, conflicts, meanings, memories, revenge, s*xuality, love and death. I gather all these life’s fragments and make some personal sense of it all. I am a record keeper of history and a maker of one. I want to know magic and I want to see the invisible. Innumerable artists’ voices – the Lascaux cave drawings, Turner, Matisse, Braque, Malevich, Rauschenberg, Mondrian, to name just a few, have informed my life journey as an artist, as a maker of meaning. Maybe my art will offer serenity and peaceful contemplation like a Morandi still-life, maybe a sense of conjuring like Jackson Po***ck, maybe a journey map to wander in like Richard Diebenkorn.” ~ Miklos Pogany ("Floating Homes by the Arsenale," Miklos Pogany, oil on canvas, 16" x 20".)

"Weaving is a good fit for me - - a combination of structure and opportunity. Intuitively I know where I want to end up, but weaving is a construction project that takes time and imagination. I make a sequence of decisions before I thread the loom and while weaving that remain a distinct part of the final piece. There is no going back and no jumping ahead. I love the transition from unwoven threads to woven - line to dot - which is always in front of me on the loom, changing and growing, row by row. There is a balance, a rhythm, and a physicality that demands my complete attention. "Working with the history of an estranged extended family dynamic, my baskets are emotional vessels; a means to cultivate and process love, understanding, relationships, and grief. These objects are designed to hold space, to hold the intangible, the thoughts and feelings that we all have but are unable to wrap our hands around. With that in mind, it is integral to my practice that this particular attempt at vulnerability is centered around the baskets’ interactions with the body. They carry the weight of memories, breath, and people, those that are absent and those that are lost. By engaging with their forms, the baskets become receptacles through which it is possible to find closure. Being able to share space with these objects, cradle them against your cheek, hold them between the palms of your hands, and nestle them close to your chest, is part and parcel of the healing process.
