Let your imagination wander, it's Friday Zine and Indie Pub Spotlight day!

🌸👁️ Wherever The Current Takes Me by local comic creator Matthew Fox is a mixed-media story about the odd and beautiful places our minds go when we let them unspool and reweave. If your meander happens to bring you to our doorstep, pick up a copy to peruse.

🍎🪞 Here’s a sample (no spoilers, I promise): This collection of sequential art swirls in little eddies. Companions embrace and talk amongst themselves about regrets and wishes. Poems and contemplations coalesce, then drift apart. The stream of consciousness and story is ever flowing.

💚 Fox's work entwines delicately crafted illuminated manuscript patterning and peculiarly lovely illustrations. I'm absolutely enraptured!

Is this a dream? Or is it Friday Zine and Indie Pub Spotlight day!

🦋💫 Serpentine #1 by local cartoonist Leila del Duca is the first installment in a three-part series set in the well-loved sci-fi fantasy Afar universe. Project yourself into the world of two stressed-out young magicians and follow along for a galaxy-spanning adventure! Weave a spell and cast a request for a copy here at the store.

📚🪄 Here’s a sample (no spoilers, I promise): Ixcel is a dedicated student in the midst of Finals, Choice Day, and abruptly finding out they’re an astral projector. When this incredible and inconvenient ability manifests, Ixcel must figure out how to juggle all of their responsibilities while helping another astral projector, Boetema, with a world-altering threat.

💛 del Duca’s sprawling Afar universe pulls together polished environmental storytelling and fascinating creature design to tell an exciting new story!

Hi, friends from Hell! It's Friday Zine and Indie Pub Spotlight day!

🌳🍿 Oswald the Overman in the Lesser Planes of Hell by local cartoonist Technoccult is the FINAL volume of a mythos-crashing fantasy trilogy. Join Oswald, Ulmer, Aster (as well as various other friends and enemies) in their final adventure. Stop by the storefront and pick up the whole series!

😇🥊 Here’s a sample (no spoilers, I promise): Having stopped a few of the worst, Oswald gets ready to fight the final few so he can finally return home! It’ll definitely be a cinch with no snares nor shocking revelations... right? Or will he be getting more than he bargained for?

🩷 Twist after twist! Technoccult’s riveting conclusion to Oswald’s story is heart-wrenching, action-packed, and silly as hell. I’m going to miss Ulmer, Aster, and Oswald!

🚀📄 Orbital Bodies by Kyra Reilly is a science fiction comic about one poor sucker's horrific job and an unexpected benefit. Park your spaceship by the shop and pick up a copy!

🌎💫 Here’s a sample (no spoilers, I promise): Houston Encino is a depressed spaceship delivery driver trapped in a predatory contract, who intends to keep his head down and get his paycheck. However, when his ship’s AI, Anika, reveals that she has become sentient, he is suddenly thrust into a world beyond corporate responsibility.

💚 Reilly's inventive paneling and gorgeous art style blend seamlessly together to tell a regrettably relatable story. I need more of this comic!!!

The newest Judge Dredd storyline, Judge Dredd: The New Future, kicks off in 2000 AD’s milestone issue #2500. In it, writers Arthur Wyatt and Rob Williams, with artist Henry Flint, explore what happens when fascism clashes with utopianism, and how the better world that’s possible draws both nearer and farther away. This follow-up to the team’s groundbreaking Judge Dredd: A Better World is a ferocious thriller about the aftershocks of an attempt at political reform that didn’t work out the way anyone hoped.

It’s set in the Mega-City One of 2148, but it’s also distinctly ripped from the headlines.
2000 AD’s milestone issue #2500 releases Sept 30 and celebrates that big round number by introducing all new storylines at once (where usually, the weekly magazine interweaves ongoing and new serials). It is an ideal time to pick up the new issue, subscribe to the continuing series, meet one of the writers, and pick up goodies for the international celebration of The Day of Dredd, all at your favorite local comic shop, Books with Pictures. Have a cookie, it's Friday Zine and Indie Pub Spotlight day!

⚖️🥠 Crumbs of Fortune by phenomenal creative team; Nichole Morningstar and Perry Crowe, is a one-shot parable about one unlucky rabbits' chance at change. Fresh out of fortune cookies? No worries, I've got one right here and it says: "stop by the shop and read this comic!"

💘🧾 Here's a sample (no spoilers, I promise): Marvin works in telemarketing and isn’t very good at it. His job is in danger and he’s also on track to die alone, which his grump of a father is always quick to point out. But when Marvin is shut out of a company lunch due to his poor performance, a chance encounter and some cheap chop suey delivers a dessert that changes his life.

💜 Crowe and Morningstar’s work is charmingly distorted, an expertly illustrated story that’s both silly and unsettling. And I’m hungry for more!

Hey punks, it's Zine and Indie Pub Spotlight day!

🥀🏃‍♂️‍➡️ Dejection by local cartoonist Soren Joray is an action-packed short story about two strangers connected by unbearable sadness, and antagonism that turns to understanding. Have the urge to scale a few buildings and leap over rooftops? Cool with us, pick up a copy of this comic on your way!

⚾️🤸‍♂️ Here's a sample (no spoilers, I promise): In the chaotic blur of everyday life, there is the desire for escape. Two people in NYC struggle on opposite ends of this dilemma. Both wanting an escape by any means necessary. Michael clings to his past and Josh rushes forward. Will they find their way out, or cling to the void they’re trapped in?

🧡 Joray’s lightning fast action and high-strung emotional conflict had my heart in my throat. Also, the double-page spread illustration is craaaaazy!

What's Portland known for? Gotta be Zine and Indie Pub Spotlight day!

🦑🪥 Sketchy People by Jack Kent is an ongoing series of life drawing collections that illustrate the draw of Portland, and many other cities; The people of course! The very weird and wonderful people. Volume nine and ten are now available at the storefront! Come on by! Also you have to tell me if you recognize anyone in there, it's the rules.

🚲🧸 Here's a sample (no spoilers, I promise): This project is about celebrating, documenting, and drawing people from all walks of life. Creator Jack Kent started Sketchy People in 2016. Each sketch is complete with a timestamp and cross street. A sketch could be someone you've seen before. It could be your friend. It could be you! The zeitgeist of this project is to remind us that we’re more alike than we are unalike.

💚Kent’s work is a Portland staple! Each quirky illustration is a much needed reminder that goofballs are everywhere. And we’re exactly what makes the world go ‘round.
