This exceptional Early American Chippendale block-front secretary was featured on the cover of the New England auction catalog where it was purchased in 2018, and we are truly privileged to offer it in our shop.
A masterpiece of New England craftsmanship, this secretary is an outstanding example of 18th-century cabinetmaking. True block-front case pieces are exceptionally rare, as they were among the most expensive furniture forms of their time. Their sculpted façades required an extraordinary amount of premium hardwood, immense skill, and countless hours of labor to carve from solid wood. Even the brass hardware demanded a custom configuration to accommodate the complex contours of the case.
The original ball-and-claw feet are among the finest we have encountered on a period piece, displaying remarkable detail and craftsmanship. Their survival in such authentic condition only adds to the significance of this remarkable secretary.
Elegant, sculptural, and historically important, this is the kind of piece that seldom comes to market. We encourage you to visit and experience it in person before it's gone—we may not have the opportunity to offer another example of this caliber for a very long time.
