🌿 The Flow of Pain & Inflammation: 4 Ways to Support Your Body

Inflammation is a natural response to injury and physical stress that helps our bodies heal. But when it lingers, it can contribute to discomfort, tension, and stiffness.

For October's Pain + Inflammation Support theme, massage therapist Colleen Shea of Colleen Shea Massage shares four self-care practices to explore between sessions.

🌿 1. Contrast Therapy: Hot & Cold

Alternating warmth and cold can encourage circulation changes and temporarily ease soreness.

Try a warm towel or heat pack for a few minutes, followed by a wrapped cold pack for one minute. Repeat as comfortable, avoiding extreme temperatures.

🌿 2. Stretching & Movement

Yoga, gentle stretching, walking, and swimming can support circulation, joint mobility, and lymphatic movement.

Even a little movement throughout the day can make a difference in how your body feels!

🌿 3. Epsom Salt Baths & Foot Soaks

Sometimes the simplest rituals are the most comforting. A warm bath or foot soak with Epsom salts offers an opportunity to slow down, relax, and release tension.

🌿 4. Massage Therapy

Massage can support relaxation, ease muscle tension, and encourage flexibility. Colleen also incorporates lymphatic techniques when appropriate to support the body's natural fluid movement.

🌿 Exploring 4 Herbs Traditionally Used for Body Care

With October's focus on Pain + Inflammation Support, I wanted to share four herbs with rich histories in traditional herbalism.

🌿 Kava Kava (Piper methysticum)
Traditionally used in Pacific Island cultures, Kava has long been associated with relaxation and unwinding. This is not an herb for continuous, long-term use without professional guidance, and it carries important liver safety precautions.

🌿 White Willow Bark (Salix alba)
Did you know White Willow played a role in the development of aspirin? Willow bark contains salicin, a natural compound that helped inspire modern aspirin. I love the connection between traditional herbalism and modern medicine!

🌿 Hops (Humulus lupulus)
More than just an ingredient in b**r! These aromatic flowers have a long history in herbal traditions, particularly in preparations associated with relaxation and rest.

🌿 Devil's Claw (Harpagophytum procumbens)
This one brings back childhood memories! Growing up, I remember finding and playing with Devil's Claw in the desert. Those plants were a different species from the medicinal Devil's Claw native to southern Africa, which has its own rich herbal history.

✨ Ways to Work With Herbs

Different herbs call for different preparations, and not every herb is appropriate for everyone. Always consider safety precautions and medication interactions.

🍂 Abundance shows up in so many ways.

This week, it showed up through my herbal community. I was generously gifted fresh hops to make into tincture and infused oil, along with a few beautiful Spilanthes plants to add to my garden. 🌿

It feels especially meaningful this time of year. The Fall Equinox and changing seasons remind us to notice the harvest—not only what we’ve grown ourselves, but everything that has been shared with us along the way.

Plants. Food. Knowledge. Friendship. Community. Time.

Abundance doesn’t always mean having more. Sometimes it’s recognizing just how much is already around us—and sharing it when we can. 💚

I’m feeling especially grateful for my community this week.

What feels abundant in your life right now? 🍁

🍂 October is all about supporting the body.
Pain and inflammation can be signals that our body needs a little extra attention. And often, it isn’t just one thing that helps—it’s having a collection of tools we can turn to.
Here are a few of my favorites:
🌿 Massage
Massage can help relax tight, overworked muscles while supporting circulation and giving the body a chance to slow down.
🌿 Acupuncture
For many people, acupuncture can be a helpful addition to their wellness routine, especially when dealing with recurring tension or discomfort.
🌿 Cupping + Gua Sha
These traditional practices use suction or gentle scraping techniques to work with the tissues and encourage local circulation. They can be especially lovely for areas that feel tight or overworked.
🌿 Food as Medicine
What we eat is one of the ways we support our bodies every single day. Think colorful vegetables, berries, leafy greens, healthy fats, ginger, garlic, and warming spices like turmeric.
🌿 Stretching + Gentle Movement
Walking, stretching, yoga, mobility work, and simply moving throughout the day can help keep the body from feeling stiff and stagnant.
🌿 Hydrotherapy + Hot/Cold
Warm baths, hot compresses, cold applications, or alternating hot and cold can all be simple ways to care for tired, achy areas.
🌿 Rest + Recovery
Sometimes we need to do less. Good sleep, hydration, downtime, and allowing the body time to recover are just as important as the things we do.
🌿 Herbal Support
Herbs can be another tool in the toolbox—from a warming cup of tea to topical oils and salves, magnesium body butter, tinctures, and herbs incorporated into your daily routine.

🌿 Do You Know What a Glycerite Is?
You may have seen those little amber dropper bottles at The Herb Shoppe 501(c)(3) and wondered—what exactly is a glycerite?
A glycerite is an herbal extract made with vegetable glycerin instead of alcohol. Like a tincture, the liquid is used to extract constituents from the plant, but glycerin creates a naturally sweet-tasting, alcohol-free preparation.
I especially love glycerites for people who prefer to avoid alcohol or simply want a gentler, sweeter way to work with herbs. 🌿 They're also a nice option for people who don't love the strong taste of traditional alcohol tinctures.
Right now we have a beautiful collection of limited-edition glycerites, including:
🌹 Rose
🌿 Nettles
🌼 St. John’s Wort
🌿 Lemon Balm
🌱 Lemongrass
🌺 Hibiscus
💗 Motherwort
🪷 Blue Lotus
🌿 Mugwort
✨ and more!
Each one gives you an opportunity to work with an individual plant and get to know its unique qualities a little more deeply.
These are limited edition, so once they're gone, they're gone. 🌿
✨ Want to explore the collection? Head to the Linktree in our bio and tap “Glycerite Collection.”

💋🌿 Cold Sores + Herbal Support
That first little tingle on your lip? It can be the earliest sign that a cold sore is coming.
Cold sores are most commonly caused by herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1). The virus remains in the body and can periodically reactivate, with triggers such as stress, illness, fatigue, sun exposure, and hormonal changes.
Here are some of the herbs I think about for viral + immune support:
🌿 Lomatium Root — Traditionally used for immune and respiratory support.
🌿 Lemon Balm — A soothing herb that has been studied topically specifically for herpes simplex and cold sores.
🌼 St. John’s Wort — Traditionally used for nervous-system and skin support, with laboratory research exploring antiviral activity.
🌿 Echinacea purpurea Root — A classic herb for supporting the body's immune response.
🫐 Elderberry — Rich in plant compounds and traditionally used for seasonal immune support.
🌿 Oregano — A strongly aromatic herb containing compounds such as carvacrol and thymol.
🌿 Licorice Root — A soothing, harmonizing herb with compounds that have been studied for antiviral activity.
🫚 Ginger Root — Warming and stimulating, traditionally used to support circulation and digestion.
You'll find all eight of these herbs together in our Anti-Viral Tincture at The Herb Shoppe 501(c)(3). 🌿
✨ It's also 15% off through the end of September!
👉 Head to the Linktree link in our bio and tap “Monthly Specials” to shop.
⚠️ Herbal note: St. John’s Wort can interact with many medications, including hormonal birth control and some antidepressants. Check with your healthcare professional or pharmacist if you take medication.

🌿 4 Herbs for Breathing Deeply 🌿

There are certain herbs I immediately think of when I want that fresh, open, ahhh… I can breathe feeling.

These are four of my go-to herbs:

🌿 Eucalyptus — Intensely aromatic and cooling, eucalyptus has traditionally been used in herbal preparations for respiratory comfort. Even the scent immediately makes me think of taking a deep breath.

🌿 Peppermint — Cooling, refreshing, and wonderfully aromatic. Peppermint's menthol is responsible for that familiar cooling sensation we associate with breathing products.

🌿 Rosemary — Warming, stimulating, and aromatic. I love rosemary when I'm feeling foggy or heavy and want something that feels awakening and clarifying.

🌿 Thyme — A wonderful traditional respiratory herb. Thyme is beautifully aromatic and has a long history of use during the colder months.

These are the kinds of herbs I love keeping nearby as we move into fall—whether they're in the garden, tea cabinet, or herbal medicine cabinet.

And when I want something I can simply reach for, there's our Breathe Easy Salve. 🌿

Massage a little onto your chest, neck, or upper back, take a moment, and breathe deeply.

✨ Breathe Easy Salve is 15% off through the end of September as part of our Immune Support Specials at The Herb Shoppe 501(c)(3).

🔥 The King of Wands + Cayenne 🔥

What happens when you pair the fiery energy of the King of Wands with an herb that brings some serious heat?

You get Cayenne. 🌶️

This month, Claire Porter explores the King of Wands alongside Cayenne—a pairing filled with fire, passion, creativity, confidence, and forward movement.

The King of Wands asks us to trust our vision and have the courage to act on it. And Cayenne? It doesn't exactly whisper. 🔥 It brings heat, movement, and a little reminder to wake up and step into your fire.

There is something I love about looking at herbs beyond their traditional uses and exploring their personalities, energetics, and how they might connect with something like Tarot.
