Victorians did, often. Hair art dates back to 17th century England and boomed during the Victorian era, 1837 to 1901. Queen Victoria helped popularize mourning hairwork after Prince Albert died in 1861, wearing jewelry made from his hair to keep him close.

Rag and bone collectors worked the streets of England as early as the 1700s, gathering rags, bones, and scrap long before curbside recycling existed. What they salvaged got a second life as paper, glue, and fertilizer. The impulse to give worn things new purpose never went anywhere. It just found its way into shops like ours. Come see what we’ve salvaged this week.

Tomorrow, Sun 8/23 11-5pm, is the Hawthorne Street Fair!!!🎉💜🐸🎶 All your favorite small businesses will be open and the Blvd will be closed to cars from 39th down to 31st. There will be street vendors, music, food and more🌞We have 30+ vendors who do an amazing job of bringing in brand new merch, nearly everyday!!! ☀️

Could you spot a handmade piece in a lineup? Yes, once you know the tell. Hand-fabricated jewelry is shaped, filed, and soldered one piece at a time, so no two pieces are ever quite identical. Mass-produced jewelry, by contrast, is cast from a single mold by the hundreds, which is why it comes out uniform. Even costume jewelry makers like Miriam Haskell elevated the craft, hand assembling pieces often mistaken for fine jewelry.

Join us this Sunday, August 23, for the 43rd annual Hawthorne Street Fair, 11am to 5pm along SE Hawthorne between 30th and 38th. Pop into Curios while you’re out among the vendors, music, and food carts. This month the store’s theme is Tiki: vintage mugs, bamboo and rattan pieces, tropical barware, and Hawaiian shirts, tucked in with our usual mix of treasures.

Tiki bar culture traces back to 1933, when Don the Beachcomber opened in Hollywood and let guests take their glazed ceramic mug home after a drink. Back then, it was just a keepsake, a way to bring the escapism home. Orchids of Hawaii and other companies later mass produced mugs for tiki bars nationwide, and it wasn’t until decades after that early wave that collectors started tracking specific molds by number, turning old bar giveaways into genuine design history.
