Did you know that every piece made by MULXIPLY is made by hand in Nepal? For over 15 years we’ve partnered with artisan groups and family-run local businesses to create our collection of jewelry, apparel, homegoods and gifts.

On August 26 catastrophic floods due to a glacier collapse on the Nepal–Tibet border caused a massive surge of ice, rock, and mud to sweep through the Bhote Koshi–Trishuli river system. As of September 4, 1,287 bodies have been recovered and approximately 5,083 are still missing with thousands displaced. This is a humanitarian crisis.

The emotional toll cannot be calculated on a country that is already one of the poorest nations in the world. The economic toll is estimated at 2.3 billion USD with an IMMEDIATE need of 53 million USD. Nepal needs your generosity now.

While our partners are based in the Kathmandu valley with no direct impact from the floods, every single person in the valley is affected by this loss, because they have family and friends in the flooded regions, and because the impact will be felt downstream for years to come.

Catastrophe breeds desperation which preys on the vulnerable. MULXIPLY has partnered with artisan cooperatives for over 15 year to create dignified employment opportunities. There will be an influx of economic desperation in the coming months and years. Creating and sustaining jobs in the valley will be vital. This is the work we do.

My sadness cup is overflowing this week.

Truth is, grief has been leading in my life this year. When the news broke of the floods in Nepal, the grief has felt suffocating.

Thank you to all who have reached out about our partners. I have had a hard time “rising above”, instead, glued to the footage coming in from this unthinkable catastrophe. The numbers are too much*. The suffering is too much. It’s all too much.

The world mostly pays attention to Nepal in the “bad news” cycle—earthquakes, riots, floods. Then we call the Nepalis strong and resilient—because they are. They gather. They help. They move forward against all odds. Again and again.

Something feels different. This disaster feels like it could have been avoided. Science points to that. But I’m not here to blame. At the end of the day, shouldn’t we all be doing a better job of thinking of ourselves as interconnected? Instead of blaming, can’t we give an actual damn about our neighbors—even if they have a different skin color, belief system, or different country? Aren’t we far enough along to realize how interconnected we are, how our economies would collapse without our trade relationships? Why aren’t we investing in a future for the greater good instead of exploiting natural resources and, even worse, human beings?

I am tired, and I cannot afford to be tired.

My friends/partners in Nepal have far less than I do, and they are gathering and helping and pulling themselves up by their bootstraps again. And again. And again.

Rachel Solomon popped into my life sometime in 2006 when we were both scrappy creatives working for a fashion start-up. I can’t unsee Rachel popping over our shared wall with Baked Lays and a Diet Coke, gleefully chirping, “Was there ever a better snack? Want to go to lunch?” I eagerly said YES. Years later, I’m still saying YES to Rachel (but we have better snacks now).

You can’t ignore Rachel. You don’t want to. Even if I didn’t know her on a personal level, I’d pay attention to her. Back then, Rachel was a lawyer-turned-writer. Knowing that law would not feed her passions, she turned to writing and mixed it with a knack for fashion which led her to Rue La La (see above Baked Lays incident). Since then, her journey is one of continued passion and hard-freaking-work, writing for brands, then casting the tone/vision for companies as a creative strategist until she co-founded her own agency, while also growing her own successful Substack/dare we say “Influencer” with a knack for hilarious, no-BS honesty and a bold, smart style that cares for and connects women in the over-50 sector.

I’m a late adaptor. I don’t Tweet, TikTok, and am rarely in reels. I like slow photos and handmade words. I prefer a paper book to a podcast, and I’m still getting the hang of Substack. But Rachel Solomon turns up in my inbox and I read to the end — sometimes for the fashion, but mostly for the real-life, honesty stuff. At this point in life, I can’t waste time keeping up with trends that are supposed to make me feel relevant. You pick what feeds you, and you don’t feel bad about it. Rachel calls it “lofted settledness”.

Rachel now lives in Miami, but visits Maine every summer. Her annual jaunt yields a visit that I marinate in the minutes I have with her often coinciding with a visit to our shop Ember where she stealthy films herself trying things on, curating a haul to take with her. It will always be a giant compliment that Rachel not only likes Mulxiply, but cares about what’s behind it.
