Vietnamese doesn’t have to be spoken perfectly every minute. It can be the language of bedtime, jokes, errands, songs, food, books, frustration, cuddles, and everyday nonsense.

Your child doesn’t need perfect Vietnamese. They need opportunities to hear it, use it, and feel comfortable with it, again and again, in the little moments of everyday life.

Back to school season is here! 🎒📚🌟

Parents already have enough things to worry about so here are a few things I’ve learned to let go of.

They’re using every tool they have to communicate. If Vietnamese + English gets the message across, I’m okay with that. 😌

Neither do I.

Some words come easily. Others take longer.

That’s okay. Language doesn’t grow in a straight line. 🌱

I just keep speaking Vietnamese.

Sometimes I turn a new word into a little game, repeat it in a silly way, or simply keep the conversation going.

No pressure.

Just more exposure.

Vietnamese doesn’t sound exactly the same everywhere and English, too.

Different accents and words can be another little window into our culture.

But he still supports our family’s language journey in his own way.

He shows up, joins us at Vietnamese cultural events, shares the food, and makes space for the language at home.

Most importantly, he never judges Vietnamese or makes anyone feel bad for speaking it.

He may not speak Vietnamese, but his presence and support matter so much.

Some days are full of Vietnamese.
Some days are…just life.
I don’t need perfection to keep going.

Every Vietnamese book.
Every song.
Every meal.
Every tradition.
Every little word.

They all add another thread to their connection with Vietnamese.

Just a little reminder to hold your doubts and start your bilingual parenting journey today 🌟

Add Vietnamese into everyday moments: look for Vietnamese books at the library, sing along to “Một Con Vịt” on the car ride, play a Vietnamese-themed puzzle, doodle an áo dài together, or simply talk about the dish of thịt kho tàu on the dinning table.

Before you know it, those little moments will add up and become your journey. 🌱
