Exploring the Minor Arcana: Tarot Suits with Jezmina Von Thiele

Strengthen your tarot skills and explore the suits of the Minor Arcana with Jezmina Von Thiele, Deadwick’s reader extraordinaire, coauthor of Secrets of Romani Fortune Telling, and cohost of
Romanistan !

The Minor Arcana of the Tarot represent daily life, practical matters, and situations, and each of the four suites have specific themes that help us make sense of the deck and our lives. In each two hour workshop, Jezmina will cover all of the Swords, Wands, Pentacles, or Cups, their interpretations, and how to integrate these cards into your magical practice. This is perfect for anyone who wants to deep dive into the tarot!

We encourage students to enroll in all four classes, for a special discounted fee, but it is not required! You will receive an emailed PDF after the class with notes, so note taking is encouraged if it’s helpful to you, but it’s optional. Make sure to bring a tarot deck, notebook, and pen. If you don’t already have a deck, there may be a few extras for the class, or you can purchase one at the shop.

Jezmina (they/she) is of mixed-Romani descent, and fortune telling is a multi-generational family trade taught to them by their grandmother. We will also discuss how Roma have survived on fortune telling as a trade and how tarot and cartomancy were popularized in the West. Roma are an Indian diasporic ethnic group who have historically been persecuted—you may have heard or used the term “gypsies” before, but it is considered a slur and we ask that non-Roma do not use it.

Home on the Hedge: Crafting with the Fair Folk with Juniper Deadwick - Tuesday, August 25th at 6pm

Gather with friends or meet new ones as we kick off our Autumn Workshop season with another craft night with Juniper! Make your own faerie house while discussing some of the folklore, the basics of faerie magic, and an introduction to “hedge riding.” Supplies will be provided, but attendees are welcome to bring any plants, crystals, charms, or other materials that they wish to incorporate.

Crafting faerie houses is not only a wonderful way to connect with nature, but with the fae who reside in and around your dwelling space. Offering faeries a home or resting place extends the courtesy of good faith and expands your own scope of their realm.

Juniper Deadwick is a hedge witch and craftsperson with a passion for folklore and mythology. She loves calling upon the spirits of plants, animal allies, the dead, and otherworldly beings, and her primary form of practice is household/hearth magic.

Deadwick’s time traveling guides are dying to take you on a stroll as we uncover local lore and paranormal presences dating back to the city’s founding in 1623!

Our classic Historic Haunts tour embarks on a journey across Portsmouth’s Historic Downtown, digging up the ghostly tales buried beneath the foundations of its most notable landmarks. Join us Saturdays at 7:00pm beginning August 22nd through Halloween!

Our Tombstone Tales tour sets sail along Portsmouth’s waterfront, with chilling tales of pirates, ghosts, murder, and witchcraft, before running aground at the Point of Graves burial ground. Join us Fridays at 8:30pm beginning September 11th until Halloween!

On Friday, June 12th from 6pm to 9pm, Deadwick’s will remain open to all who wish to proudly celebrate, featuring readings by Fern Deadwick and Jezmina Von Thiele! Deadwick’s will also proudly donate 10% of shoppe sales from the evening to NH Outright!

Since 1993, Outright has been a lifeline for LGBTQ+ youth on the Seacoast, and now all of New Hampshire, having grown into a statewide movement dedicated to fostering understanding, empathy, and inclusion. Let’s work together to create a brighter future where every LGBTQ+ young person in New Hampshire feels safe, seen, and celebrated!

This event is free to all, though additional donations to Outright are welcome and encouraged. Readings will be booked on a first-come, first-served basis.

Introduction to Working with Dragons 🐉

Dragons. These great creatures have been referenced throughout cultures the world over, for thousands of years. The word alone evokes a wealth of images and feelings, often of awe-inspiring beings, large, scaled, perhaps winged, and definitely possessing powerful magic. The dragons are ancient, majestic beings, with much wisdom to share. Though unable to manifest physically on this plane, they can affect it with their energy, and move easily through most other realms of existence. With practice and experience, they can help you traverse these realms as well, an enriching experience to further your knowledge, increase your power, and enhance your path, whatever that may be.

In this class, you will learn more about who the dragons are, why they come to us, and how they work with us. Jared will also guide you in a transitional journey to another realm, where you will meet your dragon, witness their physical form, and, with them, gain a unique perspective in flight upon their back.

Jared Parker is a Reiki master, astral traveler, and dragon rider. He has been working with his dragon for 25 years in this life, and much longer besides. Five years ago, many other dragons began coming to him. This helped deepen his connections further, and encouraged him to seek others who wished to begin or deepen their own connection through Dragon Spirit Energy Healing.

Into the Witch’s Garden: Approaching the Poison Path 🫐

Poisonous plants have long been allies of sorcerers and cunning folk. For thousands of years, they have been worked with around the globe to all manner of sorcerous ends. While most commonly known for their malefic power, these plants are far more than just a means to curse thy enemy. Some poisons hold protective virtues, others can aid and enhance our magic, and some can even be made into medicine. In the words of Paracelsus, “dosis sola facit venenum” - the dose makes the poison.

In this class, attendees will be introduced to various poisonous plants while following their history alongside magicians, sorcerers, and witches, as well as their magical virtues and safe ways to interact with them. Guests attending via Zoom will receive an emailed link prior to the class beginning.

Fern Deadwick (they/them) is a völva, trollkona, and a multi-media artist. Growing up on a farm in New Hampshire, they have spent their entire life interacting with spirits. Their practice is deeply rooted in the animist beliefs of the Norse tradition, and informed by their relationships to the spirits of land and place. Day-to-day, Fern can be found crafting in their studio or out in the garden spending time with their poisonous plants.

Journey Through the Major Arcana 🪄

The Major Arcana of the Tarot represent the archetypes and major themes of the deck, but also our lives. In this two hour workshop, we will cover all 22 cards of the Major Arcana, their many interpretations, how to work with their wisdom, and how to integrate them into spellwork, affirmations, visualization, meditation, and more.

Jezmina, coauthor of Secrets of Romani Fortune Telling and cohost of Immaterial World podcast, is of mixed-Romani descent, and fortune telling is a multi-generational family trade taught to them by their grandmother. The class will also cover how the persecution of Roma, an Indian diasporic ethnic group also known by the racial slur “Gypsies,” have shaped the culture’s practice of and relationship to fortune telling, and the popularization of tarot and cartomancy in the West.

Storied Stones: Colonial Gravestone Iconography & Cemetery Tour 🪦

Step between the stones of time on a tour of the Point of Graves, one of New England’s oldest colonial burial grounds, established in 1671. Gravestone carving was one of the few accepted art forms amongst Puritans, and these grounds contain several examples of the symbolic iconography carved by the era’s most notable stoneworkers. It is also one of the city’s most famously “haunted” spaces!

In this workshop, guests will learn about historic burial traditions, gravestone imagery, and appropriate funerary and visitation etiquette. We will also say hello to the spirits who reside in this sacred place, and lay flowers and offerings at the graves of mothers in observation of Mothers’ Day.

Juniper Deadwick is a hedge witch with a passion for folklore and mythology, and the leader of Deadwick’s Spectral Strolls, our seasonal ghost tours! Her primary interests include herbs, household magic, animal allies, and ancestor/spirit work. In her own words, she “comes from a long line of gravediggers” and spent much of her childhood in cemeteries, under the watchful eye of her grandparents, who were steadfast caretakers of the departed. Her grandmother passed on a lifelong passion for the history and symbolism of funerary traditions.
