The latest two houses for Strawbery Banke are officially finished and ready for the Gala! 🏡✨

This pair was a fun challenge, with multiple chimney designs, complex rooflines, cellar doors, and an impressive footprint. They’re also among the largest houses in the museum’s collection!

It’s always exciting to see these miniature architectural details come together, especially when each house is handmade and unique.

It sounds like these beauties will be auctioned off at the Gala this weekend, and they’re currently one-of-a-kind, so stop by and see them while you can along with the rest of the collection in the Strawbery Banke gift shop.🐦🏠

The more birdhouses I make, the bigger, more detailed -- and enormous -- they become. 🐦🏡

In addition to being amazing to look at, I try to make sure they're ideal for young bird families. Every detail has a purpose, from the 1.25" entrance and easy-clean door to built-in “studio apartments” for larger houses and small families. Each house has proper airflow, drainage, weather protection, and natural, unpainted interiors. I use pine plywood and hardwood, finished with bird-safe paints and carefully chosen sealants.

Because a birdhouse should be more than a decoration. It should be a safe, cozy place for a new family to call home. 🤍

The latest West End Birdies creation is coming together, one detail at a time. From the big construction work to those little finishing touches, every house gets the same care, creativity, and love for our feathered friends.

Well, since both of these ambitious houses will be released at the upcoming Strawbery Banke 250th gala, they are still under construction. 🐦🏡. The big work is done; now we're down to the final touches. Best. Ever.

Another beautiful summer day here in the West End of Portsmouth and another opportunity for a historic birdhouse.

Strawbery Banke is tidying up the grounds for the upcoming "250th Gala: An Evening of Food and Drink That Shaped the Nation," and West End Birdies will be playing our part. I'll be recreating and releasing two of the museum's most iconic houses for the event, beginning with the Jones house.

And . . . second in the Strawbery Banke series, the Wheelwright House, a Georgian-style structure built circa 1780. Historically, it was the home of Captain John Wheelwright, a maritime captain, his wife Elizabeth, and their two children. Today, it serves as an interactive educational hub where the museum's culinary historians and costumed interpreters demonstrate traditional 18th-century hearth-cooking and food preservation techniques. Definitely one of my favorites.

The collection is available as:
• a large two-unit birdhouse
• a smaller single-unit birdhouse
• an indoor keepsake featuring integrated LED lighting

All five house designs are available in the Strawbery Banke gift shop. I’m incredibly proud to share this project and honored to help celebrate Portsmouth's history through these recreations.

From time to time, I've been asked to design a custom birdhouse using their existing home. This one will be a birthday suprise next month, so I'll keep its location a secret for now. It's definitely my most ambitious project to date. The original 1850s house has had so many additions over the years that recreating it was quite a challenge. Best, ever.

Dealing with aggressive House Sparrows or Starlings? West End Birdie houses generally have 1.25" holes about 7" above the base with a double-thick opening. Don't let invasives take over! Ask us how!
