Flood gives the PL X more lumens but far less candela.

Candela measures a light's ability to focus in a particular direction. Tested at 30 seconds on our three samples, the two-emitter flood beam averaged 1,135 lumens and 3,613 candela, against 23,130 candela for spot.

High and low are set separately with the rear switches, so the light has four modes in all.

Dot coming back slow after every shot?

Your eyes are probably on the dot instead of the target. Nick Young's check needs no gun: pick a spot on the berm, hold your thumb over it and keep looking at the spot. The thumb turns see-through and stays on the spot as you move it around.

Now stare at the thumbnail and try to hold it there. You can't, and your red dot behaves the same way when you watch it instead of the target.

Two TLR-1 HP samples went through the same set of tests.

Lumens measure total output out of the front of the light, and the pair landed on either side of the rating. Runtime was measured on primary cells, the only battery type this light takes.

Candela was the one shortfall. Even 11% under the claim, one sample outperformed at least one of our X300 Turbo samples, and the library at lowlightdefense.com has both lights.

One of our three EPLs read over 1,300 lumens at switch on.

Another started closer to 1,100. We rate output at 30 seconds, and there the three samples averaged 94% of the 1,200 lumen claim, which counts as a promise kept.

Candela was short from the first second. The strongest sample measured under 45,000 at zero seconds against a claim of 52,000. At 30 seconds the three averaged about 37,000.

Our three PTX65R samples averaged 1,106 lumens.

That beats Coast's 1,000 lumen rating, but the average hides a spread. Two lights cleared the rating easily and the third never caught up, finishing near 34,000 candela against the 38,000 rating. Every sample still outran the 75 minute runtime claim, averaging 79.

Our PTX35R samples showed a smaller version of the same thing: one of them reached 98% of its lumen rating.

The TLR-1 HP-X sells for about $235 on Amazon.

That's high for a pistol light and well below the competing SureFire. Even on backup CR123A cells, its 700 lumens roughly match what that SureFire puts out.

Candela decides whether a beam gets through tinted car windows or an opposing light. The full HP-X data is on lowlightdefense.com, next to the other lights we've measured with the same equipment and method.
