Well Friends, I haven't kept up with my social media very much this last half of 2024, and it is because I have decided to move on. I decided about June, that I would see through the year. In that time I had scaled back on hours and on online presence.

I really did enjoy my time with Something Sweet, it was my pandemic hobby. I started in 2020 with the support of Lisa at the Majestic and Chris, the previous owner. I have met a wonderful community and loved helping the Theater out, meeting casts, audiences, and the great people downtown and visitors from out of town. I enjoyed going to vendor markets and being a presence at the various Block of Arts and Brewfests and Trick'or'Treats and other downtown parties. I loved the Children's Workshops and Storytime With Sant. I loved making social media posts about candy history, local events, or just photographing candy in a fun way. Everything was just great. I will be here for the run of Majestic's RENT, and then Majestic will take over operations.

Thank you all for your support and patronage and conversations for the last four years, it will always mean something special to me.

Hello Friends!

Recently, you may have noticed that I have not been posting much on facebook/instagram. I did enjoy creating content about the history of candy, types of sweets I carry, events going on at the Majestic Theater and around town, and bits of fun and whimsy. And I always did treasure the responses from these media posts and directly to me. It has been fantastic to be part of downtown events and the community altogether.

Some events have happened recently which have made me make a decision of the future of the candy store. I have been given an excellent opportunity, which won't give me time to maintain Something Sweet an so I feel it is time to let everyone know what some of these changes are.

This will be my last weekend with regular store hours. When Jace was working here, they were able to maintain a 5-day week, but with them going on to a better situation, I had to scale back to 2 days a week, which though not the best, was what I could do. Now with my new position, I won't be able to continue these hours. I will from here on only be open for Majestic events and special downtown events like Oktoberfest and Block of Art. During these events I will still be open to the public, so you are certainly welcome to stop in, but my focus will be to provide concessions for the Majestic.

A big thank you goes out to everyone who have come to purchase, and to everyone who has come by just to visit. I will miss that for sure. You all have been one of the main features for this little business and have made it special.

So many exciting events in the next couple of weeks!

Today at 2 pm Majestic Singers are performing at Majestic (free! donations encouraged).

Next Friday, Schuykill Free Shakespeare is performing The Taming of the Shrew (free! Donations encouraged)at Joulwan Park!
Next Saturday is Brewfest downtown, and we are celebrating Christmas in July that day with a rested and relaxed Summer Santa for selfies (free! Donations encoraged)
Next Sunday, M&J Big Band Swinging Summer! ($20, totally worth it.) at the Majestic.

So if you can't find anything to do, weeeelll, that's on you.

Saturday June 22nd will be a fun magical festival at Goodwill Grove #4 in Pottsville with the 3rd Annual Fairy and Pirates Festival starting at noon and goes to 6 pm.

Something Sweet Candies was very excited to take part in this fun, but sadly we must pull out because of the projected high temperatures. I am very sad to not take part, but I don't want to serve melty gummies.

This next Thursday, Majestic Theater is opening its summer musical "Disney's Newsies" and we're so excited. Newsies is about the paperboys' strike of 1899. And so today I'm featuring 6 candies that those boys could have gotten that are still around!

Necco Wafers created in 1847 (they were called "hub wafers" then. Necco the name came along in 1912, and ot stands for New England Confectionery Company)

Candy Corn. This halloween treat was invented in 1880.

Cotten Candy. The machine spun candy was invented in 1847 by a dentist!

Reed's Butterscotch Rolls first rolled out in Chicago in 1881.

Good 'n' Plenty. Love em or leave em, these licorice candies were available in 1897.

Tootsie Rolls. Leo Hirschfeld introduced Tootsie Rolls in 1896, named after a pet name he had for his daughter, Clara.

Other favorite candies available were Red Bird Peppermint Puffs, Peanut Brittle, Wrigley's Spearmint gum, and Pastel Mints.

One year later, tue boys could have had a Hershey's chocolate bar, introduced in 1900!

Boston Fruit Slices are a summer perennial favorite. I am fascinated by them, as they have a very different texture than most fruit-flavored candies. They aren't like gummies or jujus, definitely not airy like marshmallows.. I would say they are closest to gumdrops, but still not the same. Biting into one, I notice 2 major things: the distinct vibrant fruit flavors and the crunch of sugar crystals throughout the gel body. Also, they don't stick to your teeth. Why is that?

Well the one unique ingredient to these treats isn't pectin, which a lot of candies use. it is a substance called agar.
Agar? what is agar? Agar is a jelling substance derived from red algae. If you took any biology classes in school, you may have used Petri dishes to cultivate microbes. That substance in the Petri dish is agar. "O yuck" you might say, but worry not! Agar is commonly used in foods. It is the most common vegan alternative to animal-cultivated pectin, and is commonly used in jellies and custard, as well as a thickening agent for soups and sauces. Many Asian dishes rely on agar like anmitzu and mizu yokan. The beads in your bubble tea might be made from agar.

Fruit slices are also kosher. The company claims it wasn't first designed to be this way, but it was determined in the 1940s to be, and they noticed an uptick in sales around Passover. Now to be clear, only a selection of the flavors are kosher for Passover, (wheat is an ingredient in some flavors) so the company adjusts for that season by packaging those that qualify separately.

To be honest, Boston fruit slices are a personal favorite for me, but it is difficult describing why.

That Moxie was the first bottled carbonated soda in the US? It hit the shelves in 1884 as "Moxie Nerve Food". The recipe for the syrup was inventer in 1876 by Dr. Augustin Thompson in Lowell, MA as was first marketed as a health tonic. The secret ingredient? no, not co***ne, that was Coca-cola. Gentian Root extract from South America. In 1906, with the passing of the Pure Food and Drug Act, The name was shortened to just "Moxie".

So who is that guy on the label? Known only as "The Moxie Man" has been on the label since 1906. His identity has never really been found out but there has been a lot of speculation. in 1922 the Boston Herald offered a prize to anyone submitting proof to his identity, but no one could claim it. Some people thought it was The company's hesd of Marketing, Frank M. Archer, but he was 50 years old when the campaign started. The best guess put out by The Moxie Congress as John T. Chamberlain of Revere MA.

Moxie has a really interesting history in American culture. baseball's Babe Ruth, and Ted Williams, as well as President Coolidge endorsed it, and it was commonly featured in Mad Magazine for a while,
