There is nothing more satisfying than watching a worn hardwood floor reveal its true character.

This project showed years of finish wear, surface contamination, discoloration, and heavy traffic patterns. After a complete sand and refinish, the natural beauty of the wood was brought back to life.

According to the National Wood Flooring Association (NWFA), hickory is one of the hardest and most durable domestic hardwood flooring species commonly installed in North America. With a Janka hardness rating of approximately 1,820, hickory is known for its exceptional wear resistance and its naturally bold color variation.

One of the characteristics that makes hickory so distinctive is that no two boards look exactly alike. Variations in color, grain, knots, mineral streaks, and character marks are natural features of the species and create a truly unique floor.

Rather than replacing this floor, professional hardwood floor sanding and refinishing restored the original wood and completely transformed the space.

If your hardwood floors are scratched, faded, worn, or showing years of use, don’t assume replacement is your only option. Many solid hardwood floors can be professionally restored and refinished.

Proudly serving homeowners throughout Kitsap County, including Bainbridge Island, Poulsbo, Silverdale, Bremerton, Kingston, Port Ludlow, and surrounding communities.

Waterborne vs. Swedish Finish: Which Is Right for Your Hardwood Floors?

When refinishing hardwood floors, homeowners often ask about the difference between a modern waterborne polyurethane and a traditional Swedish finish.

At Kitsap Wood Flooring, one of our preferred waterborne systems is PALLMANN® PALL-X POWER.

According to PALLMANN, PALL-X POWER is a single-component waterborne polyurethane engineered to provide the performance of a two-component finish. It features:
✔ Low odor during application
✔ Exceptional durability and chemical resistance
✔ A clear, non-ambering finish that helps preserve the natural color of the wood
✔ Walk-on time of approximately 2–3 hours and a full cure in about 4 days under normal conditions. (Pallmann, United States)

Traditional Swedish finishes, such as Glitsa® MultiKote, are acid-cured conversion varnish systems that have earned a long-standing reputation for excellent durability in residential and commercial settings. They are known for their rich appearance but typically have a much stronger odor during application and curing than modern waterborne finishes.

For many homeowners today, premium waterborne finishes offer an excellent balance of durability, appearance, lower odor, and faster return to normal use. The best choice ultimately depends on your home, lifestyle, wood species, and desired look.

Choosing the right contractor is just as important as choosing the right finish. Proper sanding, preparation, and application determine how beautiful your floors will look—and how long they’ll last.

Can Brazilian Cherry (Jatoba) Hardwood Floors Be Refinished? Absolutely.

Brazilian Cherry, also known as Jatoba, is one of the hardest and most durable hardwood flooring species used in homes. It typically ranks around 2,350 on the Janka Hardness Scale, making it significantly harder than red oak (approximately 1,290).

One of Jatoba’s unique characteristics is that its color naturally changes over time. Freshly milled wood starts with a warm orange-red tone and gradually deepens into the rich reddish-brown color many homeowners love through exposure to light.

When properly sanded and refinished, Brazilian Cherry floors can often be restored instead of replaced. Refinishing removes surface scratches, wear, and many stains while allowing homeowners to choose a finish that best fits their home’s style. Because Jatoba is extremely dense, it requires the proper equipment, abrasives, and finishing techniques to achieve professional results.

If your Brazilian Cherry floors have lost their luster, don’t assume they need replacing. A professional refinishing can restore their beauty and extend their life for many years.

There’s something special about original ponderosa pine and Douglas fir flooring found in many Pacific Northwest homes. Years of daily use can leave these softwood floors with scratches, worn finishes, and dents, but that doesn’t mean they need to be replaced.

Professional sanding and refinishing can restore the natural beauty of the wood while preserving the character that makes these floors unique. With today’s durable finish systems, restored pine and fir floors can continue to perform beautifully for many years.

If your home’s original flooring is looking tired, refinishing is often one of the most cost-effective ways to transform the space while keeping the authentic wood beneath your feet.
