Waterborne vs. Swedish Finish: Which Is Right for Your Hardwood Floors?

When refinishing hardwood floors, homeowners often ask about the difference between a modern waterborne polyurethane and a traditional Swedish finish.

At Kitsap Wood Flooring, one of our preferred waterborne systems is PALLMANN® PALL-X POWER.

According to PALLMANN, PALL-X POWER is a single-component waterborne polyurethane engineered to provide the performance of a two-component finish. It features:
✔ Low odor during application
✔ Exceptional durability and chemical resistance
✔ A clear, non-ambering finish that helps preserve the natural color of the wood
✔ Walk-on time of approximately 2–3 hours and a full cure in about 4 days under normal conditions. (Pallmann, United States)

Traditional Swedish finishes, such as Glitsa® MultiKote, are acid-cured conversion varnish systems that have earned a long-standing reputation for excellent durability in residential and commercial settings. They are known for their rich appearance but typically have a much stronger odor during application and curing than modern waterborne finishes.

For many homeowners today, premium waterborne finishes offer an excellent balance of durability, appearance, lower odor, and faster return to normal use. The best choice ultimately depends on your home, lifestyle, wood species, and desired look.

Can Brazilian Cherry (Jatoba) Hardwood Floors Be Refinished? Absolutely.

Brazilian Cherry, also known as Jatoba, is one of the hardest and most durable hardwood flooring species used in homes. It typically ranks around 2,350 on the Janka Hardness Scale, making it significantly harder than red oak (approximately 1,290).

One of Jatoba’s unique characteristics is that its color naturally changes over time. Freshly milled wood starts with a warm orange-red tone and gradually deepens into the rich reddish-brown color many homeowners love through exposure to light.

When properly sanded and refinished, Brazilian Cherry floors can often be restored instead of replaced. Refinishing removes surface scratches, wear, and many stains while allowing homeowners to choose a finish that best fits their home’s style. Because Jatoba is extremely dense, it requires the proper equipment, abrasives, and finishing techniques to achieve professional results.

Many homes built in the 1940s and 1950s throughout Washington were installed with old-growth Douglas fir flooring. These floors were milled from slow-grown timber, producing tight grain patterns and character that are difficult to find in modern lumber.

When refinishing Douglas fir from this era, it's common to uncover layers of old waxes, shellac, varnish, oil-modified finishes, and decades of repairs. After sanding, homeowners should expect natural color variation, occasional dark stains from water exposure, nail repairs, and character marks that tell the story of an 80+ year-old floor. These features are part of the floor's history and charm.

Once properly sanded and finished, old Douglas fir often transforms dramatically. The grain becomes more defined, the warm amber and reddish tones return, and the floor takes on a rich appearance that complements both historic and modern homes.

For this project, we protected the floor with a Pallmann finish system. Modern Pallmann waterborne finishes provide excellent durability, clarity, and abrasion resistance while allowing the natural beauty of the Douglas fir to remain the focal point. The result is a floor that honors its history while being ready for decades of everyday use.

1950s select white oak floors were built to last — and with the right sanding and finishing process, they can be brought back to life for another generation.

These floors had heavy wear, old finish breakdown, deep traffic patterns, and years of use showing through. After a full sand and finish process, the natural character of the white oak came back beautifully with rich grain definition and warm color variation.
