There’s a kiddo getting ready to celebrate a milestone 18th birthday. And another one across the pond that’s becoming more independent by the second. And one dancing wildly in Heaven. Motherhood ain’t for the weak and the emotions of the changing seasons are hardcore.
Those early years... it’s pure survival mode. You look back and wish you’d been more patient, worried less or responded differently. But then grace reminds us that you were learning too.
There’s the span where you actually thought you knew what came next. Bath - Book - Bed. Repeat. Then BAM!!! Covid hits, topped off with a whopping cancer diagnosis. No instructions: NADA! Each day was a fumble of blind faith and leading with love because really - what else was there? It was a season of seizing the day and wanting it to end in the same breath.
When the babes were wee ones, you think that motherhood must get easier. A good night’s sleep would solve everything. Yeah right... Motherhood just gets different. You’re not carrying littles up to bed or chasing after them. Rather now, you carry prayers you can’t answer, worries you can’t fix and dreams you hope (with your entire soul) will come true. You realize you’re no longer the center of their lives. But you want more than anything to be the place where they come to exhale and feel 100% completely themselves. You learn you don’t want them to make YOU proud - you want them to make THEMSELVES proud - doing things you haven’t done - in rooms you’ve never been in. With a voice that never wavers.
You remember those months of pregnancy...wondering who you were actually going to meet once you became their mom. You look at them now and get a slow sly grin at who they are; the different conversations, belly laughs and new type of friendships you’re forming.
You can miss what was, what never was (still asking God about that one) and still feel giddy about what is yet to come. I guess that is what it means to love...and experience MOTHERHOOD.
