Well today was the first day of the show. We had a good amount of feedback from the patrons and some of the promoters of the show. Happy so far. Hopefully it will be super busy and we won’t have to pack it up to bring back home.

🌈 LOUISIANA OPAL — YES, IT’S REAL! 🐊

WHAT IS LOUISIANA OPAL?

Think Louisiana… and you probably don’t think OPAL!

But Louisiana is home to a very unusual and genuinely rare precious opal known as Louisiana Opal or Louisiana Sand Opal.

And the way this opal forms is what makes it so cool. 👀✨

WHERE DOES IT COME FROM?

📍 Vernon Parish, Louisiana

Louisiana Opal is associated with the Catahoula Formation, near the Leesville area.

Unlike the classic Australian or Ethiopian opals many collectors know, Louisiana Opal is found within a sandstone/quartzite material.

WHAT MAKES IT DIFFERENT?

Here’s the really cool part…

The sand grains are naturally cemented together by precious opal.

That means the opal isn’t simply a piece of opal sitting on top of a rock.

The opal itself occurs throughout the spaces between the sand grains. 🤯

When polished, those tiny areas of precious opal can produce beautiful play-of-color.

IS IT ACTUALLY PRECIOUS OPAL?

YES! 🌈

Louisiana Opal is considered a genuine precious opal because it can display play-of-color.

The darker material can make the flashes especially easy to see.

And unlike some opal materials that require backing or stabilization, solid, well-cemented Louisiana Opal can be cut and polished on its own.

WHY IS IT SO HARD TO FIND?

Louisiana Opal was produced in small quantities, particularly during the late 1980s and early 1990s.

Commercial production is no longer considered active, and quality rough can be difficult to find.

That makes good Louisiana Opal rough — especially material suitable for larger lapidary projects — something collectors and cutters get pretty excited about!

One of the coolest things about Louisiana Opal is that it has been used to make more than just cabochons.

Collectors and lapidaries have also turned this material into:

Louisiana opal—also called Louisiana sand opal—is a rare matrix opal formed when quartz sand grains are cemented together by clear opal. Found exclusively in the Catahoula Formation of Vernon Parish, it displays subtle blue, green, and purple flashes of color under light and is prized by collectors

Photos are examples pulled from the internet. If you’re unfamiliar with pricing on these opals, please look up what they go for.
To be safe, I’d say a $50 minimum should be expected for a good small quality specimen. As always, we’ll do our best to find the highest quality for the best price. We may be able to arrange a quantity discount if enough people join in.
