If we look at inflation adjusted numbers, the all time high price of beef and cattle was in the 1970’s. Although the price of retail beef in 2026 has pretty much reached that high again the price of live cattle(fed cattle ready for slaughter) is about $70-$100/cwt under that all time high.

Although the domestic cow/calf herd has decreased by about 40% since the high prices of the 70’s, the total pounds of domestic cattle slaughtered is basically the same, because the finish size has gone from around 1035 lbs in the late 1960’s to 1460 on 2026. An increase of about 40%.

Even though the size of the animal has increased, the amount the beef cartel pays for that animal is basically the same. In other words, the animal is 400 lbs heavier but the price paid for that animal is the same price per head it was in the 1970’s, adjusted for inflation.

So basically, a cattleman is putting those last 400 lbs of weight on that animal free of charge. The best I can figure this explains why retail beef has matched the all time high but live cattle prices have not.

This is not an economically sustainable business model.

The extra fat/finish on these heavier domestic cattle are being mixed with the lean foreign beef. The import beef mixed with the domestic fat is what makes up for some of the difference in increased consumption because of population growth since the 1970’s

Be good if we had some labeling so we would know what is the source of what is being purchased in the grocery store.

Read and Listen. What’s the solution?

Two suggestions.
1. Make beef check off voluntary.
2. Country of origin for beef.

Some of the difference in supply and demand is being made up by importing foreign beef, and it has been for years. I’m not a fan of imports but I’m not opposed as long as there is honesty in where the product was raised and slaughtered.

Currently, and for the last decade or so its been hidden. No consumer knows where their beef, ground beef especially, is coming from. It seems everything else we buy has a country of origin label on it. Is it to much to ask for transparency, that the NCBA opposes, by the way.

Lets label beef with its country of origin and let the consumer choose. If the consumer chooses the foreign, then so be it. It will give US producers and incentive to improve. Some people shop strictly by price, some strictly by quality, most are somewhere in between.

Cattle producers by mandate, have been paying into the Beef Checkoff Program for 40 years. A total of somewhere around $3 billion dollars paid to the National Cattlemen’s Association, now know as the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association.

In that time the US population as increased but the number of cattle have decreased by about 14% and we’ve lost half of our cattle operations.

Also, in that same time period the beef packer cartel has grown to control 85% of the beef purchased in the store.

What have you been up to since 1986 NCBA NCBA ? Thought you were getting paid to help the American Rancher?

There’s always work to do. Fence to fix. Cattle to check. Four-wheelers to tie down. But at the end of the day, we still have to remember who’s really in control.

Two things you should know about checking the summer pasture:

1. It’s never a quick trip.
2. Wear the right shoes.

We went to check the cows, water, and fence. It was still 110° at 6:15 PM.

Everything looked fine until Matt walked over the hill and called, “Bring the truck. The whole fence is down.”

A deer apparently took out about ¾ mile of fence. Thirty minutes later, we had it back up.
Just another evening on the ranch.
