Artisan Spotlight: Meet Me! Janet (Hainstock) Straley. This will be the last “Artisan Spotlight “ of the year. I felt I should probably introduce myself. I have lived in Alpena most of my life and my entire life spent every summer at Grand Lake as did my mother and her father and his mother. I am a 5th generation of Patrick and Mary Garrity one of the
”Old Light” Lighthouse keepers and the first Lighthouse keeper of the “New Light” I’m forever grateful to them since I love this area and the people and wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for them!
I started painting at 10 years old when my dad took an acrylic painting class. He showed me what he had learned and how to use them it wasn’t long that I started competing with him. We continued to challenge each other as we would paint side by side critiquing each other along the way. We loved trying diffferent mediums, I’m not sure there is any medium I have not tried once. I work mostly in acrylics and watercolors but also enjoy acrylic and alcohol inks, encaustic and gouache.
I’ve taught acrylic painting to young and old. I love to encourage people step out of their comfort zone and educate their right brains!
Four years ago I met Ilona Stroupe who was running the Homestead Gift Shop at the time, she is a very creative person who I learned a lot from on running the gift shop, which made an easy transition when she stepped down and handed the reigns over to me, two years ago.

Artisan Spotlight: Meet Judy Winkler. Judy has been coming to this area her entire life! A kindhearted lady Judy has volunteered for several Grand Lake Association events, such as Taste of Grand Lake, she has made delicious cookies for the Homestead Artisan Market & Gallery’s “Christmas in July” and has helped with the Butterfly Garden at the Homestead. She is very talented making jewelry many styles of earrings and bracelets.. When I asked Judy a few questions for the Artisan Spotlight she answered in her own sweet words:
My mom was one of 12 born in Posen. She married my dad who was from Wyandotte. They were pen pals during WWII and he drove up north to finally meet her after the war.
They lived in Wyandotte and we would come up to visit my grandparents and relatives. I spent every summer at the lake with my siblings and cousins. It was heaven!
After my husband Tom and I were married and had our family we continued coming up every summer. We were always looking to purchase our “memory place”. We finally did!
I have always been interested in crafting and I think I have tried a majority of them. I always found crafting a stress release and a way to learn new things.
I really delved into jewelry making especially working with metals. I took classes and met with some people who were inspiring.
I also enjoy quilting. I love fabric and am in awe at the artists in the field and the choices available.
I am always learning and making mistakes lol. Who knows what I will try next. Not painting…. Will leave to to the talented people in the Artisan Gift Shop.
Judy has made bags which are great for the beach, unique jewelry abd this fabulous quilt. Stop in and see these and and some of her other items!
