A PG County father stayed by his 12-year-old son’s side after a massive tree crashed through their Kettering home early Friday morning, collapsing the roof into the boy’s bedroom and pinning him to his bed.

Andrew Carter said he tried to lift the beam trapping his son but couldn’t. Instead, he stayed with him as firefighters worked to get him out, talking to him and repeatedly asking him to wiggle his toes to keep him calm and make sure he was OK.

The boy was eventually freed, taken to the hospital for evaluation and has since been released.

Carter, his wife and their 10-year-old son also made it out safely.

Parkdale High students were sent home early Tuesday after air conditioning problems left the Riverdale school without adequate cooling.

PGCPS dismissed students at 10:30 a.m., nearly four hours earlier than the normal 2:15 p.m. dismissal, as hot and humid weather continued across the area.

The early closure comes just a week into the new school year and adds another facilities issue for PGCPS families to deal with as September begins. No word yet on tomorrow.

Shout out to Justin D. Ross !

Bowie State University is partnering with Revolutionary VP Studios, the new high-tech production facility in Laurel, to give students hands-on experience with the same type of virtual production technology being used across film, television, gaming and immersive media.

The partnership will support Bowie State’s new Immersive Media, Entertainment and Gaming program, which combines virtual production, animation, visual effects, cinematic storytelling, gaming and extended reality.

Revolutionary VP Studios has been developing the partnership with Bowie State professor and program coordinator Tewodross Melchishua Williams for about a year. The goal is to create a direct pipeline from the classroom into the industry, giving BSU students access to professional-level equipment, training and production opportunities.

The Laurel studio includes a massive 156-foot LED virtual production wall, along with full production and post-production capabilities, and is being built to attract film, TV, commercial and other major productions to the area.

It’s another significant piece of the growing film and creative-tech push happening right here in PG, with one of the county’s biggest new production investments now directly connected to Bowie State students.

After a chaotic first week of school that left thousands of students without bus assignments, PGCPS is changing leadership in its transportation department.

Transportation Director Keba Baldwin has stepped down, and former PGCPS Chief Operating Officer Mark Fossett will take over on an interim basis while the di comes after nearly 10,000 students started the school year without assigned bus routes, along with complaints of missing buses, incorrect routes, lengthy rides and problems with the new Chipmunk transportation system. Superintendent Shawn Joseph later called the rollout a “leadership failure” and gave the district an “F” for its handling of transportation.

Here’s what PGCPS says has been done since:

• Staff worked through the weekend to assign routes to the original backlog of students who registered by July 31.

• A 27-member transportation surge team will remain in place to handle route changes, new enrollments, address changes and other problems.

• Routes are being reviewed and adjusted to correct errors and reduce excessively long rides.

• An automated phone system is being introduced to better track parent calls and response times.

• Families could see new pickup and drop-off times beginning Monday as routes continue to be adjusted.

That does not mean every bus problem has been fixed. Students who registered after July 31 are still being processed, and families continue to report transportation issues.

But after a week of apologies and promises, PGCPS is now making personnel and operational changes.
