A “Curemaster” is the craftsman who masters the skills to preserve and present those prized aged meats that please the palate and set the table. The production of country ham and other aged meats is a blend of science and artistry. Three members of the Newsom family have earned the title. All had youthful beginnings in the family business. Curemaster William H. “Col. Bill” Newsom took on the mantle that marks a craftsman as he operated the H.C. Newsom Store established by his grandfather, adding to it with a true traditional ham process. Curemaster Nancy Newsom Mahaffey, Bill’s daughter, became the third generation owner of the Newsom store, adding to the honors and international recognition, holding true to the process. Curemaster John C. Mahaffey, Nancy’s son, has been around “the hams” for the better part of his life, settling now into that role of trusting the process. Nature, time, salt, hickory smoke, pork and our labor — That’s it, Newsom’s, “The Ham You’ll Remember.”

Hooray for KET’s “The Farmer and The Foodie. They won an Emmy from the Ohio Valley Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. The award was made for the episode featuring Newsom’s Country Hams. Made in the spring of 2024, it aired for the opening of the 2025 season and has been aired in several public television regions since. “We are truly honored to be the subject of the winning episode,” said Nancy. The win was announced in a KET news release last week.
This is that release: “KET was recently recognized at The Ohio Valley Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS) Regional Emmy award ceremony. The awards recognize excellence in the areas of local news, programming and individual achievement and are one of the industry’s highest honors. KET’s program The Farmer & The Foodie won in the Lifestyle – Short or Long Form Content category for the episode “Newsom’s Country Ham.” The winning episode was produced by Brandon Turner, Maggie Keith, Lindsey McClave, Matthew Grimm, Nancy Southgate and Shae Hopkins. “We are so honored to be recognized for the dedication and creativity of our team,” says Nancy Southgate, Chief Content Officer. “This award reflects KET’s mission to inform and inspire through impactful content.” KET is Kentucky’s largest classroom, providing trusted programming, lifelong learning opportunities and essential services to more than two million people each week.”

Top your “to do” list today with Newsom’s BBQ “Preacher” Ham, custom smoked turkey breast, deli meats, cheeses, sauces, and more for the weekend. The store is open today and Monday, July 27, then closed for the remainder of July. We reopen on Monday, August 3rd, with a new schedule of hours, Monday through Friday from 10 am to 5 pm and Saturday from 10 am to 2 pm. That schedule offers time to come in and pick up some ham to take home for supper. Stop by and see us, Nancy and John
