The German publisher Karl Baedeker (1801-1859) didn't invent the travel guidebook, but he definitely perfected it. The saying goes: "Kings and governments may err, but never Mr. Baedeker." In German and English, the term "Baedeker" has long been synonymous with "travel guidebook". You may have seen the Baedeker in the hands of Lucey Honeychurch in the classic film A ROOM WITH A VIEW (and in the original 1908 E.M. Forster novel). Karl Baedeker was born in Essen, Kingdom of Prussia, but he began his publishing business in Koblenz, which at the time was a larger city than Essen, and a tourist destination on the Rhine.

Karl Baedeker was born into a family with a long tradition as book publishers. He later studied humanities at the university in Heidelberg. In 1832 Baedeker acquired the publishing house of Franz Friedrich Röhling in Koblenz, which in 1828 had published a handbook for travelers by the historian Johann August Klein titled "Rheinreise von Mainz bis Cöln; ein Handbuch für Schnellreisende" (A Rhine Journey from Mainz to Cologne; A Handbook for Travelers on the Move). Following Klein's death, Baedeker republished the Rhine Journey handbook, with additional information and ideas of his own. This was the beginning of what would later be recognized as the most authoritative and accurate travel guides in the world in the mid and later 19th century.

What made Baedeker's reputation was his meticulous attention to detail and accuracy. Over time he also added new features that he felt would benefit his readers. For instance, in 1846 he introduced his famous star ratings – for sights, attractions and lodgings – in the third edition of his "Handbuch für Reisende durch Deutschland und den Oesterreichischen Kaiserstaat" (Germany and Austria).

Today, in German, French and English, the term "Baedeker" (BAY-day-ker) is synonymous with "travel guidebook" (Reiseführer). The red Baedeker guidebooks are still published today, and still have the top reputation Baedeker first established, especially compared to most contemporary travel books. The German word "Erbsenzähler" (bean counter, nitpicker) is said to have originated with his method of counting the exact number of stair steps in a Milan cathedral tower, using dried peas to mark every 20th stair as he went up, and then verifying the count on his way back down. Baedeker guides eventually covered most of Europe

Karl Baedeker died of a heart attack in Koblenz on 4 October 1859. He was only 57. His grave lies in the main cemetery (Hauptfriedhof) in Koblenz. The first English edition of a Baedeker guide was not published until 1861, two years after Karl Baedeker's death. Karl's son Ernst became the first of his three sons to run the firm.

After World War II, from 1948 to 1979, Karl Friedrich Baedeker (1910-1979) revived the firm and resisted attempts by American, British and German publishers to buy the Baedeker name, which was still an international brand. The publishing house remained in family hands until 1984 when Eva Baedeker (1913-1984) died. But the "Karl Baedeker" brand name has been retained by all subsequent corporate owners of the company, in one form or another.
