It’s off the loom, but not finished as the second photo shows. This is lesson #3 in the Liz Whiteside Studio - tapestry artist / weaver Artful Threads that I started about a week ago. I’m learning so much, including what I need to learn to do better. I’m using DMC rather than wool threads and I do like the look, there’s a little sheen. Since I have a supply of various sparkly threads for , I’m planning to weave some in after I bury the weft ends in the back. On a future project I may include some sparkly threads in with what I’m using for weft. Thank you, Liz, for investigating using DMC and finding that it works using 8 strands for an 8 DPI.

Thank you to jurors Richard Whitten for accepting my collage Cherry Blossoms on Benefit Street into the 40th Annual RI Open Juried Exhibition at Warwick Center For The Arts. The show opens Oct 8, 6-8 pm, and runs until November 26. The Gallery is at 3259 Post Rd, Warwick RI.

It’s still on my 8”Chloe Mirrix Looms but it’s finished.
I wove this as one of the beginner lessons in Liz Whiteside Studio - tapestry artist / weaver Artful Threads. It’s not perfect but I’m learning and I see what needs improvement.

I had the very good fortune to find this canvas at Erica Wilson today! Many decades ago a needlepoint of this canvas hung on the wall at Erica Wilson on Nantucket and I admired it every time I was in the store. I knew it was based on one of the tapestries of the Unicorn series that’s now at the Cloisters. This canvas was created by Erica Wilson in 1989 as an adaptation from the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Seeing the completed canvas on display in a needlepoint store, for some reason my brain assumed that tapestry was needlepoint. It was earlier this year when I was at a fiber art show at Pawtucket Arts Collaborative, I saw some tapestries and learned that tapestry is weaving! That started my journey into learning to weave tapestry and it’s been delightful! The second image here is of the tapestry itself. I’ll do the canvas with needlepoint - no, I will not attempt to create the Unicorn with tapestry. I’m still doing mostly just straight lines!

I’ve been working on this tapestry weaving bookmark in the Liz Whiteside Studio - tapestry artist / weaver Artful Threads course and I’m so thrilled with her instruction. She prefers working with wool but recently explored using DMC as an alternative. Since I have some DMC and it’s also available at Erica Wilson, I decided to try it. It certainly worked, although I probably would prefer using wool. I still have to add the row of double half hitches at the top, but then it’s done and I’m on to the nest project in her course. If anyone is thinking of taking Artful Threads, I heartily encourage it!

Just wove this little house watching Liz Whiteside Studio - tapestry artist / weaver to help understand better the meet and separate. I had a shed problem and sort of wormed my way into a solution. The right side of the roof is a little wonky. The roof of the second image was also wonky on the right side. The third image is an attempt at a semicircle and the right side of that is wonky too. Hmm, I see a pattern that needs attention. The recent weaving is the first one that I’ve done using the stand of my 8” Chloe Mirrix Looms. I’m enjoying using that loom for all my learning projects!

Opening today! Nineteen on Paper show opens today at RI Watercolor Society with reception from 1-3. My collage Cherry Blossoms on Benefit Street will be there. I recently added the final touches with images from my recent trip to Japan during cherry blossom season. Artworks from 18 members of Nineteen on Paper will be in the show.

This is a practice work on my Mirrix Looms starting with double half hitches and plain weave, then meet and separate with three colors, then meet and separate with 4 yarns and a slant. I felt that the meet and separate was somewhat mathematical, which should work for my brain, but I struggled quite a bite with the 4 colors so I decided to photograph many of my passes. After I ran out of the threads I practiced twining and topped it off with double half hitches. I just now watched Liz Whiteside Studio - tapestry artist / weaver on YouTube of how to change the shed. I think I’ll refer to that quite often until I feel more comfortable with the meet and separate with more than 2 colors. Thank you Liz!

I’m adding embroidery to a wet cyanotype to add some texture. The white on the left is a sparkly Rainbow Gallery🌈 Winter thread although the sparkles aren’t showing in the photo. The limitation with embroidery on paper is that I can only put in so many holes and still keep integrity in the paper, and holes can’t be too close together. It’s handy having a small stash of Pepper Pot Silk as well as fun decorative threads. So much fun to play with it!

Today these two cyanotypes will be at the Craft Fair at the Saltmarsh Senior Center. The Fair is 10-12 this morning August 15 at the center on 81 Washington St Nantucket. I will also have seaweed art, collages and greeting cards composed of Nantucket flora or with a Nantucket theme.
