With my dear friend French singer/author/actress Chloe Mons dining together and enjoying superb food & drinks at Café de la butte in Paris.

Earlier in the week I attended Chloe’s sold out spectacular concert at Sunset Sunside Jazz Club, featuring music from her new album, A Drink With Burt (tribute to Burt Bacharach)!

Despite some rain, everyone had a great time at: SAPPHIC S’MORES: STORIES BY THE FIRE - Women’s Week Special Event @ East End Books Ptown!

We started outside, then inside when rain arrived and finally - back outside again, to enjoy captivating stories, conversations, super questions and delectable snacks!

Authors Melissa Brayden, Rachel Lacey, Aurora Rey, S.E. Smyth, Rachel Spangler, and Alexis Westmore were among the authors featured.

Marcie Ruderman’s book of poetry, LIFE, LOVE, AND EVERYTHING IN-BETWEEN (Kelsay Books), is her 4th published book and her second book of poetry. She previously wrote THE MARGINAL WAY, a thriller, OFF THE BEATEN TALE, a collection of short stories, and FEMININE FACES, her first book of poems.

It was so nice to be part of the special Ptown Library event with Mary Jane Nelson “In the Form of Bread.” Mary Jane is a former Fine Arts Work Center Fellow. She gave a powerful talk and readings about the impact of AIDS on her life and many others. Librarian Amy Raff gave a wonderful introduction.

Signed copies of “In the Form of Bread” are available at East End Books Ptown . Mary Jane is donating proceeds from the sale of the book to Ptown branch of AIDS Support Group of Cape Cod.

In this collection of vignettes—heartbreaking and often humorous—Nealon explores caregiving as both sacred practice and human risk.

She looks back to her relationship with a father devastated by the early death of her brother; to tending men—some with AIDS, some drunk, some sober—living in Bowery flophouses; to confronting racism; to the quiet instruction of a dog who teaches attention by gazing back.

The essays ask what price we pay when we offer ourselves wholeheartedly to one another, and what it means to remain open to being more than human in a fractured world.

At the book event, David gave us an insider look at the making of “Building Provincetown,” the lengthy & ongoing research & the pivotal role that lifelong residents & washashores played in putting together this crucial town history.

David also discussed the origins of the book that began with the town putting out the early editions, which later shifted to the beloved Provincetown Art Press taking on the role of Publisher, ensuring the book will be available for future generations. As the history of the town keeps evolving, David’s research continues…

David Dunlap’s book “Building Provincetown” documents the scope of Provincetown’s architectural history in exhaustive detail. He walks us meticulously street by street, lane by lane, bayside to backshore; to capture the varied nature of where past and present Provincetowners have lived, learned, worked, played and worshipped. An enthusiastic crowd showed up for our special event with Artists Larry Collins “The Sacred Band” & Christopher Sousa in Conversation.

There was a great discussion about art and the male form; homophobia and “fear” of depicting male n**es in the past and present - even in progressive places like Provincetown.

Larry and Chris gave us really good insight into the artistic process, living the life of an artist, and the enduring beauty and joy Art brings into all of our lives.

The art featured in the book is currently available to see and purchase at Alden Gallery in Ptown.

The Sacred Band is a newly published book of drawings by Provincetown artist Larry R. Collins. It features 100 drawings by Collins: most of them in charcoal, some in graphite; most on letter-sized paper, some larger; all undated; from sketchbooks over the years. They are all drawn from n**e male models, and the vast majority are close-ups of the models’ genitalia.

The inspiration for the book is the legendary Sacred Band of Thebes, an army of 300 men, 150 pairs of male lovers, from the ancient Greek city-state of Thebes, dating back to the 4th century B.C. The idea behind this army of lovers, as chronicled by Plato and other historical sources, was to motivate the courage of the soldiers through their devotion to one another. (Ho******ic attraction was commonly accepted and even venerated in the city-states of ancient Greece.)

The other inspiration for the book is a rejection of censorship and homophobia. Even in the 20th century (until the 1970s), male n**es were largely ignored by the art establishment. Collins believes that male genitalia are a legitimate subject for art. He embraces both their eroticism and their aesthetic validity.
