Brooches may not be an accessory most of us think to reach for. Something held so dearly by many of our grandmothers seems to have been lost in a generation—and we believe they’re worth reviving.

The earliest versions of brooches date back to the Bronze Age, when they were used practically to secure clothing, and by the Victorian era, brooches had become valuable keepsakes.

So, how or where do you wear it?

Over the heart: A sentimental spot, especially for mourning jewelry meant to keep a loved one close.

At the neckline: A favorite Victorian placement that let a brooch become the focal point of an outfit.

On a collar: Brooches can add decoration while also helping secure a collar or neckline.

On a coat or cloak: One of the brooch’s oldest jobs was fastening outer garments in place.

Multiple brooches: Victorian women sometimes layered jewelry, creating elaborate arrangements of personal pieces.

Day or evening: Brooches could be worn throughout the day, with more elaborate pieces suited to formal dress.

Meaning: A brooch’s stones, symbols, initials, or imagery have the power to tell a personal story.
