I’m in the UK book hunting. And I absolutely love visiting sites that are inspirational to authors—like Whitby Abbey—for Bram Stoker in “Dracula”. [1897]. This abbey stands on a cliff overlooking the North Sea—and with its Gothic arches, weathered sandstone and empty windows totally gives off vampire vibes.

What!? There was an author called “Blind Harry”? Yes, he was actually “Henry the Minstrel” and he wandered the courts of James III and James IV reciting the deeds of William Wallace one and a half centuries after the hero’s death. Around 1477 he wrote nearly 12,000 lines of Middle Scots verse in “The Acts and Deeds of the Illustrious and Valiant Champion Sir William Wallace”. He claimed it came from a lost book by Wallace’s own chaplain. Whether that’s true or not, this book was very influential in the depiction of William Wallace in “Braveheart”.

When this Bible (in Latin) was printed in Germany in 1479–there were about 50 million people living in Europe. Do you know how many of those 50M people could NOT read it in Latin? Over 49M! Only clergy and a small group of educated elite could read in Latin—just 1-2% of the population. It would be almost 50 more years before most people in Europe could read the Bible in their own language.

Holding history in my hands 🎹✨This is Beethoven’s complete Piano Sonatas, printed in London around 1899.
Look at that portrait. The ornate title page. The yellowed paper that’s survived over 125 years. Biography, historical notes, metronome marks… the whole Victorian treatment.
There’s something magical about turning these pages knowing that pianists practiced from this exact edition.
