The Pueblo County Building Department is evaluating all options to assist with the Aspen Acres Fire.
No Asbestos Testing Delays: Thanks to the Governor’s emergency declaration, property owners do not have to pay for or wait on asbestos testing. The state is treating the burn scar debris as 'hot,' allowing residents to bypass the usual regulatory testing hurdles. But must follow safe guidelines provided by the Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE)
Slashing Permit Fees: The Board of County Commissioners reduced demolition permit fees down to a flat $100-slashing what normally costs hundreds to a bare-minimum administrative fee to keep property records clear for your rebuild.
Fast-Tracking Homes: We are currently working with the State of Colorado on how much “RED Tape” can be removed on state mandates regarding codes.
Regarding debris disposal and asbestos testing: County Commissioners don't have the legal authority to pause state or federal EPA health laws. We must balance public health and safety with reasonable remediation efforts. Homes burned by wildfire often contain hazardous materials, and unscreened debris poses severe health risks to anyone in contact with it. Rules in place for hauling and landfill disposal are there to protect citizens from breathing in toxic ash during transport.
Our main focus right now is finding public funding, state assistance and nonprofit assistance so property owners don't have to shoulder all of the cleanup costs. We are on your side, and we are committed to helping each citizen as they work through recovery.
