Let me show you how!

A quick clip here of how I made my Lampshade Easter baskets. Yes, a lampshade!
They come in all shapes and sizes. So whether you need large or small you can usually find it.
Most of them are already lined with nice satin fabric.
The thrift stores are full of them. And you can fill them with all sorts of Easter, Spring or goodies. They would be great for Christmas too!

You can absolutely paint them (make sure to seal after) and then embellish each one using your Iron Orchid moulds, transfers, stamps & paint inlays and they make a truly one of a kind gift for any family member or friend.
Hope you enjoyed this an get to creating!

I used a variety of IOD
Moulds

Introducing Miss Painterly.

The resident muse of Henhouse Studios. Dressed in her famous skirt of well-loved paintbrushes, she presides over the studio as the Queen of the Brush and Belle of the Barn. She reminds us that every beautiful finish begins with patient hands and a little creativity.

Loved by all, she’s truly our vintage studio mascot.
Perfectly whimsical, artistic and is right at home at the studio.

Stay tuned for her brush tips of the week in our “Code of the brush” column.
She will be announcing all of our upcoming classes and workshops.
She also loves to drop encouraging quotes and guiding principles for the art of furniture refinishing from time to time.
A real source of inspiration, we know she will quickly become loved by all furniture artists for years to come.

🐓 Why is it called Socks on a Rooster? People ask me this all the time. And the truth is — the name comes from someone very special to our family. My father-in-law is a brilliant electrical engineer. The kind of person who can build or fix just about anything. His projects are always thoughtful, precise, and incredibly well done. But when he would step back and look at something he had just finished, he’d smile and say in his humble way:“Looks just like socks on a rooster.”To him it meant the opposite of bragging. It was his way of shrugging off praise and saying his work was nothing special… even though everyone else could clearly see that it was. That saying stuck with me.Because the truth is — the work I do isn’t always easy either. Restoring furniture means hauling heavy pieces, scrubbing years of life out of old surfaces, sanding, repairing, painting, and sometimes starting over again. It’s work. Real work.Kind of like trying to put socks on a rooster… not exactly the easiest task. But when it’s finished — when an old piece becomes beautiful again — it’s always worth it.So the name Socks on a Rooster is a little nod to humility, a little bit of humor, and a reminder that the best work is often done quietly, with our hands, one piece at a time. And around here, we believe every good finish is worth crowing about. 🐓

🐓 Why is it called Socks on a Rooster?

People ask me this all the time. And the truth is — the name comes from someone very special in our family.
My father-in-law is a brilliant electrical engineer. The kind of person who can build or fix just about anything. His projects are always thoughtful, precise, and incredibly well done.
But when he would step back and look at something he was helping us with or that he had just finished, he’d smile and say in his humble way:
“Just like socks on a rooster.”
To him it meant the opposite of bragging. It was his way of shrugging off praise and saying his work was nothing special… even though everyone else could clearly see that it was.
That saying stuck with me. Our boys loved it!
Because the truth is — the work I do isn’t always easy either. Restoring furniture means hauling heavy pieces, scrubbing years of life out of old surfaces, sanding, repairing, painting, and sometimes starting over again.
It’s work. Real work.
Kind of like trying to put socks on a rooster… not exactly the easiest task.
But when it’s finished — when an old piece becomes beautiful again — it’s always worth it.
So the name Socks on a Rooster is a little nod to humility, a little bit of humor, and a reminder that the best work is often done quietly, with our hands, one piece at a time.
And around here, we believe every good finish is worth crowing about. 🐓

Welcome to Socks on a Rooster 🐓

This page is a gathering place for lovers of old things, painted finishes, and homes filled with character.

Here you’ll find antique treasures, refinished furniture, creative inspiration, and a behind-the-scenes look at life in my studio — Henhouse Studios — where I’m building a space for classes, workshops, and community around the art of furniture finishing.

I believe furniture should tell a story.
That worn wood has wisdom.
And that a beautiful finish can bring an old piece back to life in the most meaningful way.

Around here we celebrate craftsmanship, creativity, and the quiet magic of making something with our hands.

Whether you’re here to find a piece for your home, learn how to refinish furniture yourself, or simply enjoy the journey — I’m so glad you’re here.

Welcome to the flock. 🐓
