One of our favorite stories about lanterns is the tale of the Chassahowitzka "ghost trains" and the Confederate lantern signals, or more famously, the nighttime rescue led by the lantern-bearing lighthouse keeper Ida Lewis. Over her career at Lime Rock Light in Newport, Rhode Island, Ida used her signal lantern and a small rowboat to save over a dozen people from the churning harbor waters, often rushing out into fierce winter gales with just a lantern to guide her way through the dark.
