Pre-Production Notes Continued: The original section of music used for Phil's music box. The manufacturer originally thought the tempo was too fast to work in a standard music box format, but we assured them that everyone would be on their best behavior and crank slowly...

Pre-Production Notes Continued: Hurdle #2 - Obtaining the rights for the music. We simply couldn't bear the thought of using "Pop Goes The Weasel" for Phil's music box, so after some negotiating, we obtained the licensing rights for (what else) the "Pennsylvania Polka". Attached is the video provided by the manufacturer (of a stand-in "dummy box") with the updated music cylinder inserted.

Pre-Production Notes Continued: We finally sourced a manufacturer that figured out a clever workaround solution for Phil's round stump. We then sent more detailed mockups of what we wanted the finished product to look like... A realistic reproduction of the world-famous stump at Gobblers K**b.

Pre-Production Notes Continued: What does a cylindrical tube of Quaker Oats and Punxsutawney Phil have in common? We used the box to form our first 3D prototype by molding sculpting clay around it. Looks rather impressive for a non-functioning model if we do say so ourselves.

Pre-Production Notes Continued: Concept sketch. The inception of the Punxsutawney Phil Jack-In-The-Box began with this simple sketch and worked its way all the way through the manufacturing process. It wasn't the most technical, but it helped get the job done.

Pre-Production Notes Continued. We sifted through the Way-back machine and dug up the initial rough animation sketches which show what our Phil-In-The-Box's action would be. Phil may look a little goofy, but you'll get the general idea.
