How to Block Print (Graffiti & Silk Edition)

1) Optionally, draw your design on paper with pencil
2) Attach the paper to the rubber block or linoleum block, and rub it so the design transfers.
Linoleum is more sustainable as it is made from natural materials and is more sturdy for precise designs; Rubber block is softer and easier to carve
3) Carve the design from the transfer or carve a design directly without a guide
4) Get an ink for printing, I use speedball ink, which they have for both paper and fabric. Put the ink on a flat surface, I use metal but glass also works well
5) Roll the ink onto the brayer, it should make a hissing sound like a snake as it moves
6) Use the brayer to roll the ink onto the block, try to get an even layer of ink. For printing on fabric you will want more ink on the block and than for printing on paper.
7) Press the block down onto the surface you’re printing on, making sure to press firmly and evenly. To press it you can use your hands, a baren, a clean brayer, or a printing press.
8) Take the block off and let your artwork dry, repeat on another paper or fabric if you want to
9) Clean up the ink, Acrylic ink is made of plastics so try to avoid washing a lot of it down the drain, it is better to wipe what you can first and put that in the trash before washing your tools.
