People have asked why I am closing up so here is the story.

I bought the business and took over February 1 2022. After getting all the inspections and such I became owner of Ray's Bargain Barn. I pretty much had control of the business for over a year before that which allowed Ray to do his thing rebuilding appliances.
Being a maintenance supervisor for apartment complexes and hotels it had never been even an idea that I would learn to love this thrift store. I definitely never thought I'd own it. The opportunity arose and the next thing I knew I was making payments on this place.
During the transition from Ray's it was mentioned that I had to change the name. Hell, I had never even worked retail let alone become the owner. What was going to be the name? Pete's Place? Now that just sounds conceited and more apt for a bar. Nope, not going to work.
As the business grew and people started coming in it was said dozens of times that " ...you've got A Lit'l Bit of Everything..." guess what , lol, now the store has a name too. Customers came to love visiting, the store grew and the inventory got bigger.
The mistake made here, I had never worked retail. I had no clue about codes compliance, inspections, and all that other stuff. What the store made went straight back into it. Quartzsite in the summer hit me like a battering ram. One week the store is going great, the next... nothing. The snowbirds flew the coop and I had zip to get the store through. There went my savings, I borrowed and had big hopes for the next season and boom. Election year, nobody knew what was going to happen and stayed home.
It was rough but the store kept going and we got through it.

Not your usual Thrift store finds

I've debated writing anything because I don't like conflict, however, it seems the town doesn't like having a thrift store on Main St.
I recently lost a codes compliance case which had been going on since last August. The judge ruled against me stating a child could get inside an appliance and get locked in. Industry standards were revised in 1957 to remove all internal locking mechanisms from household appliances. ( Apparently Lawyer Mr. Welch wasn't aware, or cared, about that 70 year old ruling either)
The code which I was cited under specifically states" inoperable appliances" . Doesn't seem to matter to codes compliance officer M. Steffani that my appliances all work. Prior officer told me to put up a fence. I did. Steffani then told me it had to be a sight barrier and described what he wanted, a six foot fence with slats... A couple thousand dollars in fence on a property I don't own is a tad extreme. I installed canopy rails and tarps ( kind of like a vendors stall would have). I was told that it was not suitable, " this won't do at all..." Works for every vendor in Q year after year, but not for me.
I've been told my jeep is in violation. Specifically stated in the codes "unclaimed " , the jeep is claimed, by me. Title and registration in my name . I believe that means I claim it. It's on property I rent, it hasn't been on the road in awhile but I do use it here on the property. So what is the problem? I didn't sell it to someone who couldn't even make a fair offer? Guess I hurt someone's feelings.
The claim that the property is not maintained is ludicrous. I clean the grounds almost every day. Sometimes several times during the day. You get one opportunity to make a first impression and I desire my customers to feel comfortable and secure. I strive to make this a place people feel welcome and from the community support I've received, I like to believe that has been accomplished.
I frequently get told the store is an asset to the community and it's greatly appreciated that it is here. It's a shame the people who should support a growing business are so determined to tear it apart.
I hope the town remembers what it's past is and returns to what has made Quartzsite home to so many of us.
