Something you might not know about NMCB 71. . .

Everytime we set out to produce a new BEEP Coin, we have to do our homework in order to make sure we get this right. Each new coin comes with a history lesson for us, and NMCB 71 is no exception.

Here are a few excerpts from the battalions early days in WWII which I hope you find as interesting as I did.

Originally commissioned in May 1943, at Camp Endicott, Davisville, Road Island. The 71st Naval Construction Battalion (NCB) served in the south Pacific during WWII from Oct 1943 to December 1945.

On Sept 7th 1943, the battalion board the USS Young America and sailed for it's first overseas deployment site.

On 15 Sept the ship crossed the equator and all pollywogs, including the commanding officer initiated into the ancient order of the trusted shellbacks.

On September 19th, the ship anchored in the harbor of Tutuila, American Samoa, but no one was allowed to go ashore. Two days later the ship departed with destroyer es**rt.

On Sept 23rd, the ship crossed the international dateline ( According to Naval tradition, the ship entered the August Domain of the Golden Dragons, thereby becoming members of their order, and qualified to learn all the ancient mysteries of the east)

On September 26th, The USS Young America, with the 71st NCB on board, anchored at the island of Espiritu Santo. Again, no one was allowed to go ashore because of the heavy activity on the American base...
On October 3rd the ship departed again and finally arrived at Guadalcanal on October 5th 1943.

On November 1st 1943, in the invasion of Bougainville, Detachments from NCB 25, 53, 71 and 75 landed with the Third Marine Division.

This was NCB 71's introduction into the war. NCB 71 remained to be based out of Guadalcanal while the main body worked many vital projects on Bougainville, and several detachments worked on several other islands in the theater until April 1944 when the Battalion was moved to Pityilu Island and immediately went to work building a permanent camp and Fleet Recreation Center to give battle weary Sailors, Soldiers, and Marines a place to R&R. . .

One year later NCB 71 was part of the invasion of Okinawa on April 1st 1945 and remained on Okinawa until their inactivation on December 15th 1945.

It warms my heart, when a SEABEE gets selected for CHIEF PETTY OFFICER and makes it a point to call me late at night and let me know that they've "MADE IT" =). . .

NOW BE ADVISED. . . If you think you've worked your ass off to get to this point, you may be right. But the really hard work is just beginning.

CONGRATULATIONS to all of the NAVY'S CPO SELECTEES.

Now get back to work!
