Come behind the scenes with me as I design our Baby Boy Blue Socks arrangement!

One of my favorite hydrangea tricks is dipping the freshly cut stem in **alum—the same alum used for pickling—**before placing it into floral foam. It’s a simple step that can help hydrangeas stay hydrated and last longer.

Then it’s back to designing before adding the sweetest finishing touch: a pair of adorable baby boy socks tucked right into the arrangement. Flowers AND a little gift for baby!

Sometimes we need a flower to be just the right color! For our Baby Boy Blue Socks arrangement, we use Design Master Just For Flowers in Delphinium Blue to transform a white hydrangea into the perfect shade of blue.

As I spray, I spin and gently shake the hydrangea to help evenly coat all those little blooms. It’s a simple floral design trick that makes a big difference!

You probably wouldn’t think a cantaloupe and a lottery ticket would have anything to do with becoming a floral designer—but for me, they have everything to do with it!

Years ago, I was working at a grocery store back when they weren’t open 24 hours. One night, while we were putting away go-backs, a coworker tossed me a cantaloupe to catch. When I caught it, I tore the ligaments in my thumb and pointer finger. I couldn’t even pick up a pencil!

Since it happened at work, they had to find something I could still do, so they put me at the lottery ticket counter—which just happened to be in the floral department.

After a few weeks, the floral designer started teaching me how to design flowers…and that unexpected accident completely changed the direction of my life.

Who knew a cantaloupe and a lottery ticket would lead me to floral design?

A little height can make a big difference! We used the Nora Fleming melamine bowl with the low riser to add dimension to our Mahjong snack table, then filled it with OPOPOP popcorn for a fun (and delicious!) treat.
