The rate went up again this year. The software did not get better.

A therapist choosing practice software said two things in one sentence. It did not force AI on her. And it had just raised her price.

That is the whole problem in one breath. You rent the tools your practice runs on. The price moves. The features move. You find out afterward.

I fix cars during the day. Nobody in my bay pays a monthly fee for the socket set. You buy it once. It does the job. It does the same job next year.

That is how I build the Operator's Rig. A Mac mini with the AI model installed on the machine itself. You pay for the machine once. There is no meter and no per-question charge, and nobody raises your rate next year.

A default is not a commitment. It is a position a vendor holds until they decide otherwise.

The software a practice already pays for keeps adding AI by default — not as a product anyone chose, but as a feature that arrives with an update, with a toggle somewhere in settings and the work of finding it left to the professional.

The objection is rarely that AI is bad. It is that a lawyer, a therapist, an accountant or a bookkeeper is now answerable for whether client files touch a model they never agreed to.

That is not a preference. Anyone holding other people's confidential material carries that obligation personally, and it does not survive "we changed the default."

The alternative is not to avoid AI. It is to own the machine it runs on.

A federal court has started writing AI restrictions into protective orders.

In Morgan v. V2X, the court barred parties from putting confidential material into a modern AI platform, allowing an exception only where the provider is contractually barred from storing it or training on it. The court acknowledged that rules out most, if not all, mainstream low-cost AI.

If you handle other people's files for a living, that question is now on your desk whether you went looking for it or not.
