Southern Charm Quilts

Southern Charm Quilts Making quilts is my obsession. I sell fabric, patterns and quilts. I opened up my shop in 2009 just to try and supplement what I had been spending on fabric.

My name is Melanie, and I am a quilt making ju**ie. :)
It's not just a job for me, but my hobby, passion, and addiction. I never intended it to become my job, but that was exactly what happened. By the end of summer of 2010, I couldn't keep up with orders and work a regular job, so I said goodbye to 9-5 and hello to full time quilting. At home. In yoga pants. All day. My studio is located in the b

asement of my home in northern Alabama where I live with my two teens and the best husband ever, who gutted our basement and built me a studio of my own. When you purchase one of my items you are not helping a big business become larger and larger, you are putting food on my family's table, you are helping me send my daughter to college (fall 2016), you are putting shoes on my son's feet. Southern Charm Quilts is my family's sole income. I am grateful for each and every purchase, and I thank you from the bottom of my heart for helping me get to stay home with my family instead of having to leave the house for work. All of my sewing and quilting is done on a Bernina 550 Quilters Edition machine. I use only the best ingredients I can find and I've had years to get it right. All of my quilts are made to last and are all machine washable. These are not quilts to stick on a shelf and only bring out every now and then, these are quilts to cuddle up under, to picnic on top of, to love, wipe away tears, wash and then to hand down to your next generation. Lots of time, effort, patience and love goes into each one of them, and I truly hope you will cherish them as much as I do. I ADORE you sending me your pictures with my lovelies. So please share, share, share. I like to use them in my shop when I can. Email me at mel.tray [!at] gmail.com

A few photos from the final chapter 💛

I always love this part. The sewing is done, the quilting is done, and all that's left is getting it up on the wall.

For this one, I used two hanging loops instead of the three I used on my sample. Both work great, but if you're curious, the third loop does a better job of hiding the pushpin. Little details like that always seem to matter more to me after the quilt is finished 😅

Chapter 6 of the Morning Rising Mini Quilt Class is now available ✂️

In this final chapter, we're adding fabric hanging loops, inserting the dowel, and getting the mini quilt up on the wall. It's a short chapter, but it's the one that takes the project from finished quilt to finished display.

I think this might be my favorite part of the whole quilt 💛 And I know I took way too many pics, but... there’s just something about sewing all those little blades together and suddenly having a Dresden plate in your hands. I'm dying.

Chapter 4 of the Morning Rising Mini Quilt Class is now available ✂️

In this chapter, we're cutting the Dresden pieces, turning them into blades, and sewing them together into a complete Dresden plate. I also show both ruler and template methods for cutting, along with tips for fabric placement and fussy cutting.

I really, really enjoyed quilting this grid 💛

I made the lines a little bigger this time than I did on my sample, and I ended up loving the extra space and texture it gave the quilt. It’s technically a one-inch grid, except for the rectangle happening in the center.

I marked the whole thing with a Hera marker before quilting, this was one of those really relaxing sewing sessions where you just settle in and stitch for a while.

Chapter 3 of the Morning Rising Mini Quilt Class is now available ✂️

In this chapter, we’re marking the quilt with a Hera marker and quilting the background using simple straight line quilting and a walking foot. We’re quilting the background before attaching the Dresden plate, which gives the finished mini such a pretty layered look and keeps the quilting process really manageable.

This might be the fastest chapter in the whole quilt 😅

I sat down thinking I was just going to sew a little bit, and before I knew it, the whole background block was finished and basted. Yes to easy sewing days ✂️
