ABOUT THE BOOK & AUTHOR

Ellen Skrmetti, comedian and bestselling author, returns with a collection of hilarious essays about what happens when life goes sideways—or, if you're Southern, when things go cattywampus.

Cattywampus (adj.)
Pronunciation: kat-ee-wom-puhs
Origin: Southern American English

1. Positioned askew, crooked or out of alignment; not straight
2. In disarray; turned sideways; off course
3. A state of life in which plans have unraveled, expectations have shifted, and nothing is operating according to the original instructions.

Such as when you’re living your life, raising your kids ... and then suddenly you’re raising your parents too. When your hormones go haywire and you’re navigating “The Change” with no warning ... and at the same time your daughter is navigating her own "changes." (You also have to navigate that fact that nobody in the South calls things by their real names.) When you’re forced to confront the possibility that you haven’t always seen everything clearly, and you need to course-correct, stat.

The hilarious essays in this book include:

1. I Wanted It Done Right (and Other Reasons I Wrote My Own Obituary)
2. Hustle, Hustle, Pray
3. Yes Ma’am, No Ma’am, Have You Taken Your Meds Ma’am?
4. When You Bring a Zebra To The Tailgate
5. From Beer Pong to Mah Jongg ... Pastimes in Later Life

Staff pick from Christy for THE PAST IS RED by Catherynne M. Valente

"Want a strange little book to read? I read this on a whim after seeing the cover and it's now one of my most favorite reads. Valente's silliness and dark humor shine through as she explores a world drowned by water while life is sustained on floating islands of trash. The novella follows a child, sent out by her parents to find her name and her purpose, as all the children before her did when they reached the same age. The struggles are both unique to the island and all too familiar at the same time. A quick read that will stick with you for years to come."

Today, we mourn the loss of another great legend. Southern readers may know Wendell Berry for his poetry, essays, and fiction. Let us read his words today and remember his prolific life.

From "How to Be a Poet" in Poetry, January 2001.
"Accept what comes from silence.
Make the best you can of it.
Of the little words that come
out of the silence, like prayers
prayed back to the one who prays,
make a poem that does not disturb
the silence from which it came."

ABOUT THE BOOK & AUTHOR

A rising Hollywood star explores the road not taken with her first love in this tender second-chance romance by the author of The Christmas Orphans Club

Katie’s wildest dreams have come true. She’s a Hollywood actress, booked and busy, and promoting her latest film. Sure, she still struggles with sexist media malignment and unimaginative roles, but from where she stands today, her hometown of Dutch Ridge, Pennsylvania feels a million miles away—and that makes it all worth it.

Because Dutch Ridge can only ever represent Drew. Every street is filled with memories of their shared adolescence, how they were each other’s first everything, the hours they spent planning for the future. Drew was the only person in Dutch Ridge who didn’t make Katie feel delusional for dreaming big, because he did, too. She was going to be the next Julia Roberts, and he was going to be president someday. Was it their extraordinary level of ambition that brought them together at sixteen? It was definitely what drove them apart in the years after.

But now, a promise to her sister forces Katie to return to Dutch Ridge for Christmas, where she runs into Drew, who seems to have followed a different path from the one they once dreamed up. And strangely, he seems...happy. As their run-ins heat up and the two can't keep themselves away from each other, Katie begins to wonder whether her accolade-filled Hollywood life really fulfills her after all. Back Where We Started is an emotional second-chance romance, a story about allowing oneself to change, the addictive nature of achievement, and how we make room in our lives for what matters most.

BECCA FREEMAN is the author of The Christmas Orphans Club. She's also the co-host of the popular books and lifestyle podcast "Bad on Paper" and the writer behind the Book Enthusiast newsletter. Becca is a graduate of Boston College and currently resides in Brooklyn, New York. Back Where We Started is her second novel.
