Ever wonder what happens to your kitchen sponge or shower luffa when you’re finished with it? 🧽
Most of us are used to reaching for a plastic sponge or synthetic scrubber in the kitchen or bathroom. But what if your scrubber could start right here — growing in a garden? 🌿
What you’re seeing here are luffa vines growing in the backyard of our co-owners, Mark & Samantha.
Luffa is actually part of the cucumber family. The fruits grow on these vines, and when they’re left to fully mature, the inside develops into the natural, fibrous material that eventually becomes a luffa sponge.
Once dried and cleaned, luffa makes a great natural scrubber for dishes, sinks, and countertops, and it can also be used in the bathroom for gentle exfoliation and scrubbing.
And when it’s finally worn out, it can return to the earth instead of becoming another piece of plastic waste. 🌱
Mark & Samantha grow their luffa alongside medicinal perennials and pollinator plants, with no chemicals or intensive intervention. Their garden is a little wild — and they like it that way. They give their plants some gentle care and let nature lead the way.
It’s pretty amazing to think that something we use every day can start as a little vine growing in the garden.💚
