Gayle Weisfield: Watercolor and the Western Spirit in Taos

Gayle Weisfield is a watercolor artist whose work captures the light, landscape, and enduring spirit of the American West. Raised on a family ranch overlooking Mount Hood in the Columbia River Gorge, she grew up surrounded by livestock, horses, and the practical demands of ranch life. Those early years shaped both her subject matter and her approach: an appreciation for hard work, open space, and the quiet details of the land.

Weisfield’s paintings have earned recognition in national and regional exhibitions, including prestigious Award of Excellence in Watercolor Media from the Plein Air Painters of New Mexico, the Pike’s Peak Watercolor International, Masterworks of New Mexico, and the Eiteljorg Museum’s Quest for the West. She is a signature member of several watercolor societies including the Western Federation of Water Color Societies and continues to teach, share her process through tutorials, and welcome visitors to her studio.

Robert LaDuke and the Echo of Stanwyck’s Shanty

Robert LaDuke’s paintings open a window onto a brightly colored, slightly dreamlike version of mid-century America. Cars gleam, trains cut across bridges, Airstream trailers rest under wide skies, and vintage aircraft slice through clear air. The scenes feel familiar yet slightly heightened, as if pulled from a child’s memory of old magazine ads or a collection of carefully kept steel toys.

In 1936, while filming Banjo on My Knee, Barbara Stanwyck used a simple mobile dressing room that studio workers and colleagues nicknamed “Stanwyck’s Shanty.” Photographs from the set show a modest, practical trailer, far from the luxurious star trailers of later decades, serving as her personal space between takes.

From Concept to Bronze
The Hands-On Craft of Tony Oviedo

In Northern New Mexico, where generations of artists have carried traditions from one generation to the next, Tony Oviedo has found his own way to keep an old craft alive. A sculptor, santero, storyteller and bronze caster, Tony grew up surrounded by art and craftsmanship. His father was a master sculptor and santero, and as a boy he worked in his father’s shop, learning the traditions of Spanish Colonial wood carving. But his artistic education didn’t stop with wood. It eventually led him to the family’s bronze foundry in Chimayó, one of the last full-service foundries of its kind in New Mexico, where he began learning the demanding craft of bronze casting at an unusually young age.

Mata Ortiz pottery is a recreation of the Mogollon pottery found in and around the archeological site of Casas Grandes (Paquimé) in the Mexican state of Chihuahua. Named after the modern town of Mata Ortiz, which is near the archeological site, the style was propagated by Juan Quezada Celado. Quezada learned on his own to recreate this ancient pottery and then went on to update it.

The Humanist Portraits of Erin Currier

In the bright light of her Santa Fe studio, Erin Currier transforms the discarded packaging of a global consumer culture into luminous portraits of resilience and dignity. Candy wrappers, cigarette packs, and scraps of printed ephemera collected from more than fifty countries become the clothing, backgrounds, and symbolic details of her subjects… motorcyclists, mystics, dancers, activists, and ordinary people whose quiet determination she holds in high regard. Through this alchemical process of collage and paint, Currier creates work that is at once deeply personal and broadly political, insisting that the common threads of human experience outweigh the differences that so often divide us.

Lakota Sioux Painted Child’s Robe, Circa 1870

Throughout the Great Plains the painted buffalo robe was perhaps the single most item that evoked a time in which the Native peoples of the Americas roamed the west. The buffalo provided everything the nomadic people’s needed to survive; food, clothing, weapons and a true sense of culture. Nothing was wasted and nothing was used without giving thanks.

This Lakota Sioux girl’s robe from a Wyoming collection is thought to be made from an unborn buffalo calf and uses the “box and border” design elements giving honor to the animal. The Rise of Native American Flat-Style Painting

In the early twentieth century, a distinctive way of painting took hold among Native American artists that would come to define much of what collectors and museums still call traditional or “flat-style” Indian art. The approach featured clean outlines, solid areas of color, little or no shading, and often a plain or very shallow background. Figures stood out clearly, whether they were dancers in full regalia, everyday scenes, or ceremonial moments. Three groups of artists, working in different places but connected by shared ideas, played especially important roles in bringing this style to a wider audience.

New Arrivals from Poleyestewa

Chimayo Trading has just received new kachinas from Polyestewa, the well known Hopi carver who is inspired to continue the life of some of the rarer kachina identities. Poleyestewa’s kachina dolls are crafted in the traditional style, reminiscent of those made in the early 1800s. Unlike modern kachina carvings that often feature exaggerated motion and intricate detailing, his work emphasizes simplicity and authenticity, with arms tucked close to the body and carefully considered adornments.
