🫎 Huge thanks to Pappa Dukes for capturing this precious mother and baby moose moment!

As serene as they look from afar, mama moose (cows) are fiercely protective and won’t hesitate to defend their calves. Before you hit Colorado’s trails and waterways on your next adventure, take a second to review these essential safety tips from Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW):

🌲 Trail Safety Essentials

🔊 Make Noise: Moose love thick willow bushes near water. Because the brush is dense, you might not see them until you’re too close. Talk loudly, clap, or make noise when approaching corners or thick brush.

🐕 Leash Your Dogs: Most moose conflicts involve dogs. An off-leash dog can easily surprise a hidden moose, triggering a chase that brings an angry 1,000-pound animal running straight back to you. Keep pups on-leash!

🚫 Never “Haze” a Moose: Trying to scare or chase a moose out of your way is dangerous, counts as wildlife harassment, and is illegal. Give them time and space to move on their own.

⚠️ Signs a moose is stressed/aggressive:

Laid-back ears

Pawing the ground

Licking its snout

Staring directly at you or changing direction to face you

If you see these signs, you are too close. Back away immediately!

🏃‍♂️ If a moose charges: Do not try to outrun it in the open. Run and put a massive obstacle—like a large tree or a boulder—between you and the moose.
