Great photo!

Congratulations to the September Photo Contest Winner

Congratulations to Robert Kaslik for capturing the Photo of the Month for September's Outdoor Photo Contest. This great moment of a cow and calf moose is one of the many amazing sights our service territory has to offer in spring and summer. September was a highly competitive month with several high quality images submitted, making it fun and challenging to choose the winner.

As it is National Wildlife Refuge week let's take a moment to celebrate Arapaho NWR. The 25,000 acre refuge sits in a 8,200 ft high valley surrounded by 10,000 to 12,000 ft high mountains. It was established in 1967 to provide a nesting, rearing and stop over habitat for migratory birds. Wetland areas and ponds have been developed on the refuge using irrigation water from the Illinois river. The refuge also includes riparian, sagebrush and meadow habitats.

Because of the diverse habitats on the refuge, many species live here: 208 species of birds, 37 species of mammals, 6 species of reptiles and amphibians, and 10 species of fish.

When you visit the refuge you can enjoy bird and wildlife watching, walking our nature trail, scenic drives, fishing and hunting

These two handsome young males were spotted at Arapaho NWR. How do we know they are young? During the warmer months, when food is readily available, pronghorn separate into groups. Mature dominate males are solitary. Female and newborn fawns form nursery herds. They exclude young non-breeding males from their nursery herd. Young males will form bachelor herds. The young male pronghorn will stay together for safety, depending on each other to spot predators and alert the group.

Good Thursday Night from Rand!

My how you have grown! This mom and calf moose were spotted recently at Arapaho NWR. Moose give birth in late May or early June. Calves weigh 25 to 35 pounds at birth. They gain weight rapidly, averaging two pounds a day. By fall they weigh about 500 pounds. Although they will eat plants within a few weeks of birth, they will continue to nurse until fall. Moose milk is exceptionaly rich, having a fat content of 10% and a protein content of 8 to 12% which is very high for a hoofed animal. Calves will stay with their mother for about a year, leaving shortly before the next calf is born.
