Happy Pride Month! Are you a friend of Dorothy?

The phrase "a friend of Dorothy" originated in the 20th century around WW2 as slang for LGBTQIA+ folks, gay men and soldiers in particular, to discretely find out if the person they were talking to was also gay (or an ally) during a time where being gay was a jail-able offense.
It is debated whether this originated from The Wizard of Oz, and the q***r subtext in both the original novels and the film adaptation, or from Dorothy Parker, an author and screenwriter in the 1920's and 30's who was married to bisexual actor Alan Campbell. The couple were known for throwing lavish parties with many gay attendees, who could get into the party without an invite by stating at the door that they were "a friend of Dorothy."
