Gel spun backing isn’t something you want to load with a pencil and a buddy.

When you’re dealing with heavier backing for big fish, proper tension matters. If it goes on too loose, it can dig into itself under pressure, seize up, and turn a good fish into a very bad day.

Joel walks through how we load 65 lb gel-spun backing with the right tension using our line winder here at The Fly Shop.

TFS Guides Travis Ortiz Travis Ortiz and Ross Wilkerson Ross Wilkerson found some amazing browns on the Trinity recently! They’ve got the brown trout on the Trin dialed.  
“Fishing has been good. Salmon and browns are around and there’s a few summer run steelhead still in. Flows have been around 450. The river is fishing well and it’s a good way to get out of the heat.”

Our friends at Alaska Steelhead Co. have put together a unique late-season package for anglers who would rather spend more time fishing and a little less time at the lodge. 
October is prime time on Alaska’s Kenai Peninsula, with fresh wild steelhead moving into a diverse collection of coastal rivers. Anglers can swing flies through classic runs, fish productive smaller streams, and take advantage of one of the most varied steelhead programs in Alaska.  For this special October departure, ASC is trading one night of lodging for an additional day on the water - giving anglers six full days of fishing for the standard package price.

We are excited that the upper section of the Lower Sac will open up on Saturday! The closure is to protect the endangered Winter Run Chinooks, and this year we have a bumper crop! This is good news, but the great news is there are a TON of big ‘bows behind them eating eggs while they are digging their redds. These fish haven’t been fished over for months, it will be wild!

The evenings have been super as well. We have openings in the first week of August, give us a call or hit the link in bio to book a day on the water.
