We’ve got a real unicorn on the bench today: the Leblanc Semi Rationale. 🎷

Back in the 1950s, Leblanc set out to build a sax with dead-on intonation by placing tone holes strictly according to pure acoustics—eliminating the usual tuning quirks you have to lip into pitch.

The catch? Correcting the physics meant completely rewiring the keywork.

Crazy Fingerings: The key logic is wild—pressing your right middle finger lowers left-hand notes by a half-step, letting you fly through runs without touching side keys.

Ahead of Its Time: It packed a dedicated high F # key and articulated pinky cluster long before they were industry standards.

Tech’s Nightmare: Regulating the interconnected linkage system is like timing a vintage Ferrari V12. One tweak affects three other keys down the line.

To be honest, none of us here know how to actually play this thing properly! We had to watch a video by saxophone repairman Matt Stohrer to figure out if we had a semi or full rationale. (Super helpful video, thanks Matt!)

Because they were costly to make and required relearning muscle memory, very few were ever built.

It was great to be back at Clarinettissimo 🎶 It was fun chatting with all the who came through and played things from a subcontra to a metal . Marissa, our clarinet specialist, even did a few minor repairs as a bonus. Huge thanks to Orca Concerts for organizing, and we’re looking forward to next year!
