I’ve used period products every month for most of my adult life and never once asked what was actually in them.
A 2024 study testing tampons across 24 different brands found measurable levels of lead, arsenic, and 14 other heavy metals in every single sample. Separate testing found PFAS, the forever chemicals linked to cancer and hormone disruption, in nearly half of pads tested and two thirds of period underwear tested. Tampons are only regulated as a moderate risk medical device, so none of this has to be disclosed on the label.

I wish switching to reusable fixed this automatically. It doesn’t. A 2025 study found PFAS in reusable cups, pads, and underwear too, added on purpose in about a third of the products tested. This isn’t disposable versus reusable. It’s about which brands actually prove what they leave out.

I haven’t been recycling properly, and I’ve been doing this for years.

Black plastic containers, the kind restaurants pack takeout in, or the ones people reuse for meal prep, aren’t actually recyclable in most places, and I had no idea.

Most recycling facilities sort plastic using infrared light to identify the material type. The black pigment absorbs that light instead of reflecting it, so the machine often can’t read it at all, which means it usually can’t be sorted and gets sent to landfill instead, even if the plastic itself would technically qualify.

The bigger issue is what’s often in the plastic itself. Because black plastic isn’t recyclable, a lot of it gets produced using recycled e-waste, discarded electronics, instead. A 2024 peer-reviewed study found flame retardant chemicals, the kind used in electronics, in 85% of black plastic products tested, including food containers. Those chemicals can leach out, and heat makes it worse.

This is the one I’d say just skip entirely. Glass or stainless steel instead, no exceptions.

Yellowstone was other worldly.

I have traveled to some unique places but nothing prepared me for standing at the Grand Prismatic Spring or watching hundreds of bison roam freely across land protected for over 150 years.

The world is so beautiful. I felt genuine gratitude just being there.

And then I thought about what I knew.

Scientists tested the water in Yellowstone Lake, the tiny crustaceans living in it, and the native Yellowstone cutthroat trout. Every single one came back positive for microplastics.

Microplastics travel through the atmosphere. They do not need roads or rivers to reach the most remote places on earth. The air is enough.

Experiences like this feel like a privilege. And with privilege comes responsibility. To protect what is still breathtaking. To make choices that leave this world intact for the generations coming after us.

I did not come back feeling hopeless. I came back feeling responsible.
