Yes!!

Research finds “grandma hobbies” - traditional, slow-paced, hands-on activities like knitting, gardening and baking, provide significant health benefits and even lengthen lifespan.

🗂️Stress Reduction and “Activate Meditation”: Many traditional hobbies involve repetitive, rhythmic motions that induce a meditative state.

📑Cortisol Regulation: Activities like knitting and gardening lower cortisol (the stress hormone) and heart rates, moving the body out of “fight or flight” mode.

📑Neurochemical Boost: These activities can trigger the release of serotonin and dopamine, improving mood and promoting emotional balance similar to mindfulness meditation.

🗂️Cognitive Protection and Brain Health: Creative hobbies act as “full-body workout” for the brain, building cognitive reserve.

📑Neuroplasticity: Learning complex patterns in quilting or the science of fermentation builds new neural pathways, which can improve memory and executive function.

📑Dementia Prevention: Regular participation in cognitive hobbies is associated with a lower risk of dementia and slower age-related mental decline. One study suggests that hobbies like knitting can reduce dementia risk by up to 50%.
