Something that fascinates me is sustainability or eco friendly design options. One of my favorite books as a kid was “101 Ways Kids Can Save the Planet.” I was raised in the era of 101 fact books.
While I’ve come to realize my role isn’t salvation of a planet, my role is absolutely to steward a gift I’ve been given in Creation with care and thoughtfulness.
It’s one of the reasons, I’ve worked to move my business to avoid using the toxic, microplastic filled green foam if possible. But there are times that a floral design needs a holding medium. I have options and love using and teaching about them in classes, but this little brick was a new one.
It’s a 1.5 x1 in tube to replace the plastic water tubes florists use when giving single flowers or in large designs. While I can’t say I see myself completing skipping the plastic water tubes when doing large scale arrangements (I have been known to wash and reuse the tubes) this little bit of Sideau AgraWool was perfect for the mini espresso shot arrangements I create and the mini arrangements I make in local pottery for The Reister’s Daughter!
According to the New Age Floral website these are made from basalt wool with plant based binders therefore completely biodegradable.
The other thing I’ve noticed when I did a test run was they didn’t tend to grow molds like some floral foam does.
So I’ll keep an eye on these and figure out how and when I can use this Agra wool more!
